Many traditions say the soul enters the body with the first breath, and leaves with the last breath.

This may be true of many other traditions, but not of the Jewish or Christian tradition, which are based upon the Old and New Testaments.

In Genesis God breathed life.

In the spirit of Einstein it is worthwhile to investigate what the Bible actually says and what actually occurs at the moment of conception (9 months +/- before a human being takes his or her first "breath"). Therefore I hope that you will not lightly pass over my post to you, for I have investigated these matters, and in love have spent a great deal of time composing this reply to you. I choose to think that you really do find these matters worthy of investigation. As you so rightly quote in your tagline, "Condemnation without investigation is the height of ignorance."

At the very moment that the woman's egg cell is united with the man's sperm a new human life appears - complete with every single characteristic that makes that "zygote" a living, growing human being - and immediately, even before he or she (gender is already determined) implants in the wall of the uterus, he or she begins to grow at an amazing rate. That human being, at the very moment of conception, is in fact a new life - and only God "breathes" life - with a blood type unique to itself, in some cases differing from both mother and father, and hair and eye color and all sorts of propensities already 'programed' into that new life's every cell.

By reasoning upon the literal 'breath' aspect of life, not taking into account that God's "breathing" is the impartation/inspiration of a man's spirit, and his soul, you are illogically arguing that a person on a ventilator (during surgery, or after a stroke, for instance) is not actually human.

Each person's DNA is determined at conception when a sperm cell fertilizes an egg cell producing a zygote. ...The DNA of a person is identical throughout a person's body. All human cells (except red blood cells) contain DNA. The DNA is determined at conception and does change throughout the life of an individual. All persons formed from a unique zygote have a unique DNA structure.
DNA testing/Maternity & Paternity

Your blood type is actually established before you are born. At conception, one gene from your mother combines with one gene from your father, determining your individual blood type. ...In pregnancy, maternal-fetal incompatibility of blood types can occur.

There are so many scriptures we could investigate and discuss - especially fascinating is the study of the Hebrew original words - but here is one part of one verse that I've chosen from among the rest, for it really should be all that is needed:

"The life is in the blood." ~Leviticus 17:14a

And the LORD God formed man [of] the dust of the ground, and breathed [Hebrew: naphach] into his nostrils the breath of life [Hebrew: n@shamah]; and man became a living soul [Hebrew: nephesh].
Genesis 2:7

"[B]ecause the life [Hebrew: nephesh] of every creature is its blood. That is why I have said to the Israelites, 'You must not eat the blood of any creature, because the life [Hebrew: nephesh] of every creature is its blood; anyone who eats it must be cut off.'"
Leviticus 17:14

Jesus breathed his last breath and then "gave up the ghost".

Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit [Greek: pneuma]."
When he had said this, he breathed [Greek: ekpneo] his last.
Luke 23:46

I've spotted a typo (now) in the quotation from the Maternity & Paternity Web site:

The DNA is determined at conception and does change throughout the life of an individual.

Obviously that should read that the DNA determined at conception does not change throughout the life of an individual.
