ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Production at the nation's largest oil field has been reduced again.
According to a spokesman for oil giant BP, this time the problem is a compressor.
Production at Prudhoe Bay was running at about half its normal rate, after pipeline corrosion led to a small oil spill this month. That prompted the shutdown of the eastern half of the oil field, where BP Alaska is now working to replace 16 miles of corroded pipe.
BP was able to produce 200,000 barrels a day from the western half of the field, but has now dropped that by 90,000 barrels.
It said the latest problem will take several days to repair.
The price of Alaskan crude is down this morning.
I heard all oil is down earlier on the radio,
I believe I heard $ 71.50 (maybe $72.50 !)
Big improvement from $77 last week.

...The breakdown knocked out 90,000 barrels of oil production per day, driving down overall Prudhoe output to 110,000 barrels per day, said Daren Beaudo, a spokesman for field operator BP Exploration (Alaska) Inc...
...Then came Wednesday's glitch at a plant called Gathering Center 2, which separates the raw stream coming in from wells into oil, water and natural gas.
A compressor that handles the gas went down, and fixing it could take several days, Beaudo said Wednesday evening.
"It was a mechanical failure," he said. "I don't have any more detail about what caused it."

"First oil production from the Central Azeri field began in February 2005. First oil at the West Azeri platform wellhead was achieved on 30 December 2005 following the completion of commissioning activities. This increases the ACG offshore facilities oil production capacity by 340,000 barrels a day. The Phase 2 development of the field, which involves the installation of production, drilling and quarters platforms at West Azeri and East Azeri, is expected to take total production from ACG up to more than 800,000 barrels a day in 2007. We anticipate production will plateau with the completion of the Phase 3 development centring on deepwater Gunashli at around one million barrels a day by 2009. "
"operations of the BTC pipeline started up first in Azerbaijan with the beginning of linefill at the head pump station at the Sangachal terminal in Azerbaijan on 10 May 2005. A total of 10 million barrels of crude oil is required to fill the line. On 10 August 2005 the first volumes reached the Azeri-Georgian border and on 17 November linefill proceeded into Turkey. During the stage-by-stage linefill and commissioning, the focus remains on rigorous testing to ensure the integrity and safety of each section prior to introducing oil. The official inauguration of the Turkish section of the pipeline and the Ceyhan Marine Terminal is expected to take place in the spring.
