Mac Donald's essay isn't profound theology and isn't meant to be. It is simply an all-too-rare example of an intelligent secular challenge to the often not-very- intelligent pronouncements of the religious right. While their policies are good, their God talk doesn't do much for us politically.

Heather Mac Donald is a priceless public intellectual. To call this particular piece not profound, however, is an understatement. Be that as it may, I mildly prefer verbiage about values that, like my own writing, isn't overtly theological. But I doubt there is any electorally significant windfall available from using that different language more often.

LOL!

Not British Common Law. You need to read up on history. Start with the Pilgrims.

"And don't forget Slavery that great bastion of Christian morality over the lessers of gods creation..."

No Christian would approve of "slavery". Sorry to burst your bubble. Just like the KKK isn't Bible based ... .

"But seriously The founding fathers drew from BOTH Christian and "secular" sources the basis for America."

No, that is a misnomer. If you read up on the founding fathers, that is unsanitized versions, it is crystal clear where our laws, punishments and form of government cane from. I wish I still had the link ... it went through Lev. Numbers and Deut,. and listed where each of the laws came from and the accompanying punishments.

"Otherwise america would now be a dump like some pacific islands that are 100% devout Christian."

Excuse me? America is becoming a "dump" precisely because we have no boundaries for morality ... abortion, in your face homos, cameras all over because people are irrespobisble and habitually lie and on and on it goes.

"I don't think the founding fathers intended for this barbaric Islamic/Christian practice to last as long as it did."

You're out there!

Christianity has NOTHING in common with Islam and Christianity is certainly not barbaric. The more you say, I see the less you know.

again, Christianity and it's teachings has NEVER promoted slavery of ANY kind. It's not MY fault that human beings abuse each other and twist the Bible. Some things never change ... hypocrites will always exist till Christ comes and claims His own. Till then, why not learn what Christianity is and isn't before saying such foolish nonsense.

"early Christian emperors stamped out classical religion by destroying temples and outlawing pagan rituals"

This wasn't my quote but I do agree that Christianity is what civilizes people. Ms McDonald is an imbecile by choice. She's not intereseted in truth of knowledge.

It is so disturbing to see people like yourself so DUMB when it comes to the history of their country. I'm assuming you are an American and not a foreigner with an ax to grind.

Do you know ANYTHING?

Inside The U.S. Supreme Court building is a sculpture of Moses holding The Ten Commandments. He is the ONLY sculpture with a FRONTAL view.

Do you know how MANY times Moses is shown in D.C. and GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS with the TEN COMMANDMENTS?

ANY CLUE?

Let me help you out ... if that's possible.

Moses with the Ten Commandments in the rotunda of the Library of Congress

While I'm at it, SEE what I'm describing. Maybe that'll help.

"Liberty of Worship" statute resting on the Ten Commandments outside the Ronald Reagan Building.

The Ten Commandments in the floor of the National Archives

A few "religious" sculptures and writings:
T

he Adams Prayer Mantel in the White House

YOU read the prayer - it's shown on the link I provided - just scroll down.

An excerpt from Virginia's Statute of Religious Freedom, authored by Thomas Jefferson, on the wall of the Jefferson Memorial - READ IT!

A stained glass window of George Washington praying, in the chapel in the U.S. Capitol

BTW, George Washington and other Americans weren't praying to Islam's "allah".

View Lincoln's Memorial and what was written THERE!

And on and on it goes.

READ the article. EDUCATE yourself about the U.S.. and it's history 0 how IMPORTANT the BIBLE WAS, yes WAS in forming this country, government and laws.

Ignorance by choice, as you have displayed stuns me each time. It's so sad. Maybe you're just a closet A.C.L.U.er.

This woman obviously has read the book I just finished The End Of Faith by Harris. (can't remember the reprobates first name). In it, he not only makes it clear that there is no God, but that people must not tolerate those of us who do believe in Him any longer. It was the most frightening book I have ever read so Hitler like was his message. We who believe are a danger to the survival of the rest of the nation, and must be stopped. (heard this anywhere before?) If you have a strong heart, read it because it sends a message that is chilling and helps clarify just how strong the anti Christian left is, and why God is being removed from our lives in the USA.

It seems his main fear is the Islamic A bomb from the reviews that I read.

This discussion between Mac Donald and others isn't aimed at regular folks, though. It's aimed at intellectual types. Whether we believe in the Big Guy or not, it's important to show intellectuals -- who mostly don't believe in God, or don't believe in a God who controls our lives -- that you can be an atheist or agnostic and still a full-blown conservative. Frankly, if we leave conservatism completely to theists, in a less and less theistic age, we eventually give up the game politically speaking.

Christianity is the biggest single factor in civilizing people in the West; I think you're right there.

But that's not to say that the actions of early Christian emperors, such as Mac Donald cites, weren't essential to its reaching predominance in Europe. I don't know if they were or weren't. Do you?

Agree that to use slavery as part of a case against Christianity is unfair and really rather stupid.

It never ceases to amaze me those who question why "bad things happen to good people". The following just shows that they have no inkling as to what is in the Bible. They have in their mind what is good and cannot fathom a God who is perfect.

He said to him, " Why do you call me good? No one is good but one, that is, God.

Rubbish..Jesus had the opportunity to decry slavery as a revolting barbaric practice that had nothing to do with god. But he wholeheartedly said " I have not come to change the law but to complete it " . Jesus NEVER disowned the evil verses of the new testament. BTW I am not an atheist or anti-christian. Just a realist.
