Communism was an ideology that was never fully implemented politically. It is just a cloak for another form of tyranny. The US is really practicing democratic socialism and we are moving closer and closer to the European model. We don't need to understand communism to understand totalitarianism, which predates and supercedes Communism. It should be the other way around, to recognize the perils of Communism, you should understand totalitarianism in its various guises.
To understand Communism is to understand liberty (few do). To understand liberty is to understand militant Islam.
