Less than a month before the Republican primary, Senate hopeful Kathleen "KT" McFarland announced Monday she is temporarily suspending her campaign.
In a statement, McFarland says the decision follows her daughter's shoplifting arrest on Long Island.
McFarland's spokesperson says she is be no means dropping out of the race, just taking time off to deal with the situation with her daughter, Camilla. The 16-year old was arrested on Saturday, caught shoplifting from two stores in Suffolk County.
Camilla McFarland has been charged with two counts each of petty theft and possession of stolen goods.
In a statement, McFarland says: "My husband Alan and I are deeply alarmed by this incident and will be spending every waking hour in the coming days dealing head on with the repercussions of her actions. Our children are our first priority, and our youngest child needs our full and immediate attention."
The announcement comes at the height of the campaign season. McFarland, a former Pentagon official during the Reagan administration, faces a primary on September 12 against former Yonkers Mayor John Spencer. The two have been in a nasty battle to win the right to take on Hillary Clinton.
Spencer's campaign would not comment on this development.
McFarland's campaign has been struggling. She's in debt, and embarrassing stories about her personal life have emerged.
It's unclear when McFarland will get back to campaigning. She was scheduled to be on NY1s Inside City Hall on Tuesday night, taking phone calls from viewers.
Her spokesperson insists McFarland will still make that appearance next week.
Ping.
Suppose this is the handy work of Lensner and Pellicano?
I doubt the Hillary! camp has anything to do with this. They'd probably rather face KT, since she doesn't seem the type to try to pillory Hillary! in the general election. Hillary! will be reelected no matter what, but at least Spencer will take the fight to her, I think.
Better than getting arrested for shoplifting in Fort Marcy Park.
I do think you are right on that.
Bob Davis the former chair of the Erie county Republicans is running KT's campaign. I told him that has always been his way to fight against the Conservatives, he did to me for years. He's an ass.
