As I recall, and correct me if I did not remember right, Bunning made an ethnic slur against the Democrat who nearly beat him. And of course KY was once part of VA.

He did, but his behavior leading up to the election also included avoiding public appearances and staging a debate in a way that reinforced rumors that his mind is not what it was. He wasn't done in by a single gaffe, but by a collective impression that he was no longer "there" that he was not able to counter. He won mainly because his candidate was an unknown and because Kentuckians would rather have had a solid vote for a conservative agenda than a Democrat senator.
Allen, meanwhile, is still a talented politician who can campaign his way through to the end.
I'm curious if anyone knows more about Senator Bunning... I would guess his office is being run much like Strom Thurmond's, with trusted staff making important decisions in the way Bunning would have voted.
