RIVERSIDE, N.J. - Hundreds of protesters and counter-protesters assembled in this small Philadelphia suburb Sunday in response to the community's new attempt to crack down on illegal immigration.
About 200 protesters argued against a township ordinance adopted last month that bans the hiring and housing of people who cannot verify they are legal residents. A larger group massed across the street to support the new law.
People on both sides of the street waved American flags, but traded hostile remarks.
"This can only lead to more separation, more hostility, more hatred, more anger," Marlene Lao-Collins, associate director of the New Jersey Catholic Conference, told protesters. "As we have seen, this ordinance has already created hostility toward all immigrants, whether they are illegal or not."
Several cars drove past waving Confederate flags and shouting, "Go home!" while one person held up a sign that read, "We Are Home."
The ordinance punishes landlords and employers who house or hire illegal immigrants. Local officials estimate that as many as 3,500 illegal immigrants, many from Brazil, live in the town.
The ordinance is similar to one passed in July in Hazleton, Pa., and comes as other towns across the nation are considering such measures.
Both the Riverside and Hazleton ordinances have been challenged in federal court.

LOL! I was not aware that New Jersey folks kept their Confederate Battle Flags at the ready. Convienient how they had a sign pre-made with a retort to those racist Confederate Flag waving Joisey yanks.

The Pubbies in this state need to campaign like the politicos in Mount Laurel 30+ years ago. Faced with democrat ruled for many many years, the Pubbies ran with a simple slogan: "Had enough yet?"
I think this state, if it has any chance of staving off bankruptcy and further corruption, need a "Had enough yet?" candidate at each and every level of government from local dog catcher to the governorship. Corzine; what a Loser.
Strange how they can come up with a number (200) for the illegals-lovers, but can only report "a larger group" for the law-abiding citizens. A subtle way of making the first group appear larger to people who are scanning the article, and also downplaying the difference to those who read more carefully. How much larger is "larger", 100? 1000?
Could somebody call Gov. Erlich of Maryland and give him a headsup , we average about 2000 applications a week for drivers licences from illegals , you know , like a factory .
That burns me up. They NEVER have insurance, but isn't Jersey no-fault anyway?
People are always screaming about how laws that attempt to make it more difficult for illegal immigrants to live here will foster hate. I haven't heard of any cases yet in which an illegal was beaten up solely for being illegal, though. Of course, that doesn't mean it hasn't happened yet, but I would have thought that such a case would have been extremely publicized...
WOW! I'm impressed and heartened to learn so many turned out on the anti-illegal side!
Usually, in the past what would happen is the illegals would mobilize huge turnout through their grassroot network of community groups and churches while Joe & Jane Suburbia suddenly remember they have a job/soccer practice/shopping trip/visiting mother-in-law/headache or some other reason not to show.
Maybe the pendulum is not only finally swinging the right way but some gaining momentum!
Don't leave out the part about them being registered as Democrats, and having an entire week to vote using no-excuse absentee ballots!
