Is there room left in the Senate for a courageous moderate Republican? Not if Steve Laffey, who wants to oust Lincoln Chafee in Rhode Island, has anything to say about it

"I just saw you on television," the elderly woman is saying from behind her screen door. "Were they attacking me, or was I talking?" Steve Laffey, a Republican running for the U.S. Senate from Rhode Island, asks. It was an ad, the woman says. About your parents.

Alzheimer's, she says. Laffey's father has Alzheimer's. The ad is about the working-class modesty of the Laffey family. The candidate is going door to door on Lionel Avenue in Coventry, R.I., on a soft summer evening. He is accompanied by a mob that includes his wife and five children, plus assorted childhood friends of his and their children...plus a clutch of campaign workers trailed by a very large recreational vehicle plastered with yellow-and-blue laffey for senate signs.

Klien sounds worried. What will the Senate do without courageous moderates like Lincoln Chafee? What a puke-fest. When a beltway, liberal numbfork like Joe Klien gets this exercised, it must mean Laffey has a chance at having the last laugh.

According to the last Quinnapiac Poll of Connecticut, apparently so.

Only problem. He is not a "Moderate" he is a Democrat in everything but name. What has he voted with the Republicans on? Amazing that the same people weep giant tears about Liberal Republicans but have NO problem with the Democrats purging Leiberman despite the fact he votes WITH the Democrat leadership 90% of the time. Democrats, the Cult of Hypocrisy

Chafee is only "Moderate" when compared to Bernie Sanders. He hasn't voted for a Democratic leadership team during the biannual Senate organization vote yet, but that is only a matter of time.

The Republicans need to be more moderate? I can't think of a pro life Democrat at the national level...

Joe Klein is remarkably smarmy. Thick, gooey sickeningly-sweet smarm that could be termed Smarmalade.
