Sekula-Gibbs gets Republican backing
Fort Bend Herald Coaster ^ | August 18, 2006 | By Stephen Palkot

Texas Republican Party leaders on Thursday announced they will be supporting Houston City Councilwoman Shelley Sekula-Gibbs in the race for Congressional District 22.

Sekula-Gibbs, who announced her wishes to run for District 22 in April, will now be mounting a write-in campaign and could see financial and organizational support from the local, state and national Republican Party. . . . . .

"Tonight we start the grassroots Republican campaign that this district is well known for," she said. "It is a district that has over 60 percent Republicans and we will turn them out."

She was chosen Thursday night at a closed-door meeting in Pearland involving Republican precinct chairs from the district's four counties. . . . . .

A write-in candidacy remains the last chance for a Republican to win the seat in November, and Thursday's meeting was organized for party leaders to decide whom they would support.

The Republican Party cannot prevent numerous individuals from filing as write-in candidates, but party leaders have said they will only support one candidate.

In addition to Sekula-Gibbs, Sugar Land's Republican Mayor David Wallace has announced a write-in candidacy. This move angered many Republican leaders, who worry the conservative vote, as well as campaign resources, will be divided between the two candidates. . . . . .

Hey Steve, while we're on the topic, why does she have extra last names? And why doesn't she pick one?

Gibbs will get the Female vote

Gibbs might, but there's no Gibbs running.

You know, she did mention that issue when asked...

I unfortunately forgot what her response was to that, I was in a conversation with a fellow PC about what we need to do now...

I'll give her a holler tonight or tomorrow, and let her know that there is a wider degree of concern about this issue inregards to the difficulty in E-Slating her name into the machine, and that it sounds to feminism-ish to have a hyphen in her name...

I agree with both premises, and it may be too late to change it to a simple "Gibbs" as her last name at this point in the race...Thats an election technical issue that may be blocked by a law as well...So I don't think it was intentional...She's always run on that hypen...And won three times on it...Something to think about...

As far as the prolife issue...

Guys...

If it comes to the whole Roe vs. Wade deal...She'll vote to change it, throw it our, burn it...She's Catholic and a devout one at that...So thats something that a lot of folks may not know as well...

- Pro 2nd Amendment, she has me as a personal advisor on those issues...

You know...I tell y'all what...Lemme get to the house and link her website on FR, HAT, and the FR local page...

I think that will give you guys and gals some info to think about...

I gotta run...Commute time...WOO HOO!

Under Texas law, a vote for just "Gibbs" or just "Shelley" counts as a vote for her.
