CA: Call to the GOP faithful
Sacramento Bee ^ | August 20, 2006 | Kevin Yamamura and Laura Mecoy

LOS ANGELES -- Reminding his wide-ranging Republican base of the alternative this election year, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger used his state GOP convention speech Saturday to attack Democratic challenger Phil Angelides for proposing tax increases and opposing the state's use of National Guard troops along the U.S.-Mexico border.

In his 19-minute speech at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza, the governor called for charter schools and English-language instruction for immigrants while engaging the luncheon crowd in a chorus of "noes" in opposition to big government.

Schwarzenegger took credit for reducing the state's budget deficit and creating new jobs since becoming governor in 2003. Repeating the theme of his party's ongoing campaign ads, the governor said state Treasurer Angelides would only send the state backward.

"Our friends in the other campaign want to go back to the failed policies of the past -- higher taxes, more government spending, more government regulations and less growth," Schwarzenegger said. "That is dead wrong and is a recipe for disaster."

(snip)

McClintock, a conservative state senator from Thousand Oaks, led Friday night's speeches at the convention with other down-ticket candidates. Some expressed optimism that Schwarzenegger's popularity could help all the statewide Republican candidates this year.

But with a full bank of cameras and reporters on hand Saturday, none of the down-ticket candidates stood with the governor at Saturday's luncheon, and banners promoting the other candidates had been removed from the vast convention room before the governor's speech.

Well, Arnold doesn't want the voters to get the mistaken impression that he's a Republican.

Tom has been nothing but supportive of Arnold's re-election. This typical RINO betrayal is even more blatant than what they did to Bill Simon.

The saddest part is that the people in that room would see this for what it was, Arnold's people knew it, and didn't care. Flaunting power was just too much temptation, power that they thus don't deserve. It's long past time for a purge of the CAGOP leadership.

More from Bill Bradley's blog today:
The down ballot candidates spoke Friday night at a convention dinner, but only one reporter was there. There was little notice that the candidates would speak then.

There was a balloon-drop style demonstration for the candidates, with all of them appearing on stage together. But the shot was captured by none of the media.

Several gave notable speeches, including state Senator Chuck Poochigian, who gave a rip-roaring 100 percent negative speech on former Governor Jerry Brown, the frontrunner in the race for state attorney general. But they may as well have happened in the proverbial forest in which the tree fell but no one heard it.

Needless to say, Schwarzenegger did not appear with the generally much more conservative members of the Republican statewide ticket. There were no signs for the other candidates in the hall when the governor gave his convention address.

Sounds like the campaign is going down as feared by many here,, the elimination of the right and any reasonable hope for representation by same is pretty much nigh complete.

This is depressing. Arnold got his butt kicked last year, and now he's lost all interest in his fellow party members? In all conservatives?

OK, I supported the guy, but because I thought he would bring a breath of fresh air - and a pattern of winning - to the CA GOP. But between his backing of embryonic stem cell research and the party still being in disarray, I'm let down.

"It's long past time for a purge of the CAGOP leadership."

Precisely how do we initiate that? By simply starting a drum beat for it, or what?

Do we compose another Magne Carte for CAGOP, another 95 Thesis to nail on the CONvention door, or another Declaration of Independence complete with the proverbial list of unpardonable sins? What??? Let's git busy!!!

Sierra, your tagline says it all.

Support Republicans that deserve it and let Arnold hang out to dry on his own. He has done it to us.

I say we should build strength in the counties and eventually, we will be able to get the party back into conservative hands. With Tom McClintock in as the LG, and then the BEST choice for governor in '10, its a long game.

The thing that blows me away, is how the Republican party in this state is totally run by the leftists in LA, SJ and SF. I understand population counts, but there is something wrong when the supermajority of counties are conservative, and the minority liberal counties drive all of the decisions.

Which, among other reasons, is why this family will be no-voting the Austrian in November. Dufus Sundheim, the CAGOP and the New Majority can go straight to hell.

It's long past time for a purge of the CAGOP leadership.

Amen to that, Brother! Doof Sundheim needs to go, along with all the other Country Club Republicans.

Last two conventions have been held at two of the priciest hotels in CA. The San Jose Fairmont and the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza. $20 a day to park at the HRCP, and if you leave and come back it's another 20 bucks. Eight dollars a beer!

I am a voting member of the CRP. Each County Central Commitee chair gets 5 appointment. Everyone who runs gets at least one appointments, 5 if you do better than 10% of the Republican registration in your district(IOW if Republicans are 25% of total registration and you win >35% of the total votes in the general election, you get 5 appointments), 7 to 10 if you win the seat.

With only 12 counties in SoCal, more candidates that do well even if they don't win and more elected Republicans in NoCal how can you justify that statement?

It all started with the Earl Warren (former CA Governor) Supreme Court decision humorously dubbed the infamous "Cows Don't Vote" decison of 45 years ago!

Ever since then, the metro-sexual counties have utterly and ruthlessly ruled the rural-sexual counties with an iron hand and no velvet glove!!!

This is true in other states as well. Both houses of State Legislatures must be elected by districts based on population. Representation cannot be based on geography, although taxation still IS!!!

So it's taxation without adequate representation!!!
