Arab Americans
Grollier's Encyclopedia ^ | April 21, 2006 | Helen Samhan

Posted on 08/19/2006 6:07:18 AM PDT by CobaltBlue

Arab Americans are as diverse as the national origins and immigration experiences that have shaped their ethnic identity in the United States, with religious affiliation being one of the most defining factors. The majority of Arab Americans descend from the first wave of mostly Christian immigrants. Sharing the faith tradition of the majority of Americans facilitated their acculturation into American society, as did high intermarriage rates with other Christian ethnic groups. Even though many Arab Christians have kept their Orthodox and Eastern Rite church (Greek Catholic, Maronite, Coptic) affiliations, which have helped to strengthen ethnic identification and certain rituals, their religious practices have not greatly distinguished them from the Euro-centric American culture. Roughly two-thirds of the Arab population identifies with one or more Christian sect.

I'm Catholic, myself, so not even sure what is meant by "standing up for Christ." I mean, we stand up in church sometimes (as well as sit, kneel, and genuflect), is that what he means?

That's a joke but I really don't know. Are Christians supposed to go door to door, proselytizing?

Stand on the street corners, preaching?

Take out ads in the newspaper?

What?

Because of their silence, and because of it is no surprise that Judge Taylor's jurisdiction is from an Arab stronghold. Black and Muslim separatists have made common cause where they are not the same.

Christian arab americans should be shipped out?

On what legal basis can American citizens be thrown out of America on the basis of national origin?

How would that even be possible?

Use your common sense. Arab-Americans are almost 80% Christians, and almost 80% of Arabs in America are American citizens.

Here's another example, John Sununu, former Republican Governor of New Hampshire and White House Chief of Staff under George HW Bush. You want to put John Sununu into a concentration camp because his ancestors came from Lebanon?

That's crazy talk!

"Good. They still need to be profiled if not just shipped out. This is war, best to err on the side of our safety."

I'm an Arab-American on my father's side (Greek Orthodox), and at least 6 generations deep South on the other. I had at least two ancestors who fought for the Confederacy. That's the last time we took up arms against the US.

I was an early Goldwater supporter, an early Reagan supporter, and am a lifetime Republican (before being a Republican was respectable in the South). I'm also an evangelical Christian and a long term Freeper. You're ready to "ship me out"? You've got to be kidding.

The article I linked to is from the Grollier Encyclopedia - are they a secret front for evil-doers, too?

If you have facts that refute the facts I posted, post them.

Because otherwise, you're just sliming.

For some "freepers" it seems that the only way any American Arab or Muslim could prove they were a "good American" would be for them to shoot themselves.

I, for one, would not stand for it. Further, I believe he doesn't represent the majority of Americans.

The "ship 'em out" crowd (i.e., those who want to deport or imprison innocent Americans of the wrong color or religion) doesn't represent anything other than the anti-American cracker racist constituency. Yeah, I guess I am bear baiting.

Ha!

People just want to be safe and I don't fault them for that. But their solutions are sometimes way off base.

"he doesn't represent the majority of Americans"

That's surely the case on throwing US citizens out of the country based on ethnicity.

I've been profiled plenty of times (abroad), and almost missed flight connections out of Heathrow, even though I've never been to the Middle East (or Muslim Asia). It didn't bother me, though I would not have been happy if I had actually missed my connections.
