My grandson's are 4 and 6. They need reminding every once in awhile but they open doors. They also say yes sir and no ma'am. I was traveling awhile back with one of them. A passenger heard and I thought she was going to faint. She told me that was not acceptable "up north" and was considered racist. Go figure

Racist? You are kidding me! What's the matter with people who consider good manners racist??? Sheesh.

considered racist ???????? I, and everyone I grew up with -- Mexican American, Black, Asian and Arklahomian -- knew enough to address adults as sir or ma'am as well as Mrs. Jones or Mr. Smith if you knew their names.

Needless to say, my daughter, in her mid-twenties, has never had to be reminded. She has complained that she often gets static for it. She still is polite because, "It just doesn't feel right not to be". This is part of the natural order of things!
