The counterfeiting charge because they "altered" the software is ludicrous. As is the "money laundering" charge. If this is all it takes to be charged with money laundering: "They also were charged with money-laundering. Prosecutors say that they used proceeds from the cell phone transactions to buy more phones." -- then they have just criminalized all business in the United States.
