French swoop to evict 1,000 at migrant squat

Riot police stood by yesterday as an operation began to clear up to 1,000 migrants from a former student hostel that became one of Europe's biggest squats.

Hundreds of officers sealed off access to the rundown block at Cachan, on the outskirts of Paris. An activist assisting the immigrants said children were crying as the eviction began at 7am.

Many people had barricaded themselves in their rooms in the block, where the so-called "Cachan Thousand" - mainly from former French colonies in Africa - had over the past five years made their homes in a hostel built to house 300 female students.

Squatters are said to be divided between illegal immigrants, asylum seekers and people with permission to stay but unable to find housing. Illegal migrants found at the squat face being deported.

A local official said the place had to be cleared because poor wiring there created fire risks. Last year, about 50 people, mainly immigrants, died in fires at overcrowded accommodation in Paris.

The Left said the eviction was inspired by the immigration crackdown by Nicolas Sarkozy, the interior minister and a presidential contender.

"An activist assisting the immigrants said children were crying as the eviction began at 7am."

This one line is the key...it is the one that ALL MSM talking heads will dwell on, to "save the children", just as they do in their arguments for the 20 million criminal aliens in the U.S.

If true, kudos to Sarkozy. Perhaps there is one man in France with a backbone, a mind committed to reason, and balanced sentiments.

the so-called "Cachan Thousand" - mainly from former French colonies in Africa

So, the former oppressed colonists would rather live in the homeland of the oppressor than go home and be free?
