I just posted another article on this. SOrry. Should have searched better. Your article has more info - especially the name of the exercises.

Looks like they are getting ready to block the Gulf entrance, invade Iraq and defend against Afghanistan.

block gulf entrance

I hope they can swim, because their boats will be sunk.

invade Iraq

This is where our concentration of forces is the highest. Our air forces would decimate ANY ADVANCING ARMY and if that wasn't enough, they don't even have an answer to our ARMOR.

defend against Afghanistan

This may be possible. We have very few forces (compared to Iraq) there, they may do better to invade Afghanistan than Iraq, but they might be counting on a Shiite uprising in Iraq to help them. Still our airpower in the region would decimate ANY ADVANCING ARMY.

...bought a case of cigs, 12 cases of longnecks and as much ammo as I could afford, just to be safe.

I was the total opposite. Everyone was out buying supplies (especially WATER) and my Mother-In-Law called during the day on New Year's Eve and asked if we had "stocked up", my wife confidently told her "No." and then said "Del (That's me.) said nothing was going to happen." She was dumbfounded at why we were ignoring what the government (especially the local government) was telling us. She told my wife "better to be safe than sorry." and that ended the conversation.

I would stock up on cigs, beer and ammo anyway, so your purchases seem like a normal monthly trip to me.

"OK....now you're just mixing 80s songs on me."

The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind.

Think Silkworm ... think C-802 ... now think of them after any supertanker attempting to run their 'blockade'

Decimate .. yes, wipe out, not yet. I hope we have a few MOABS and other big nasty things sitting in depots just waiting. I fear we may not.

Airpower alone cannot stop an attacker, just like it canot win wars. Would Iran be stupid enough to attack? Listen to that little feller the President talk and you have the makings of a world class nutjob. Their Supreme Leader (whatever the hell that is) has also warned the country to prepare for war.

I'd say this is tantamount to a war warning scenario.

If they can conceal their missiles, they can shut down the straits, since they can launch from several places on land within range. If if they are not successful to a high degree, they only need to get one or two, which they can do by surprise, to send the world oil markets into a spinning bag of chaos. Then the decision for the US is whether to bomb Iran to try to keep the straits open.

I have long felt that there should be a way to put sufficient oil pipeline capacity through Saudi to another port so that the Straits are no longer a choke point.

A terminal at Mecca would be good. /sarc off

Yes we can decimate an advancing ARMY with AIR POWER, it's real simple. Do you remember the HIGHWAY OF DEATH in 91? I agree that wars cannot be won from the air, however, any advance by the Iranians would be snuffed out quickly in the open desert. Guerilla or Insurgent tactics are not included in this scenario because they don't apply.

As far as MOABS are concerned, at best they are a very good Psychological weapon. More tactical if you ask me, less strategic. Our strategic assets outweigh them immensely in the mid-haul (not the long-haul) So, if oil jumped to $150.00-$200.00 a barrel for a few months, it would be terrible, but not a WWII scenario, in which we lost many of our resources, not just money as a percentage of GNP, but men as well. Besides, the Euroweenies would be screaming if there wasn't enough oil and we would have an additional cheering section created just so we could get the job done QUICKLY.

I am just an armchair general, though. I don't really know that much.

In this day and age, up becomes down, and left becomes right, and I don't think anyone can predict how the world will act. We are living in the "Twilight Zone." We in the US can't even agree that there is a threat from Islamofascism, or what to do about it if there was a threat, or whether we should even try to stop it.

We are a country without a compass, and I wonder how long the sane majority will be able to direct the country through these troubled times.

This is a multi-year struggle, and we are a society that must see a resolution to problems within a half-hour time slot (including commercials). We lack historical perspective to know where we have been and where we must go, and what has been tried before and what works and what doesn't.

We have a court that will not let us have the tools to protect ourselves.

If the dogs of war are unleashed, I am concerned for mankind, and I am concerned for the republic, regardless of the outcome.

I wish someone could tell me some good news.

The Shi'ite will soon hit the fan. Will there be a sale of Persian glass afterward?

Well.. the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke & John and all the rest, Old & New. Psalms are really good, too.

I have just read a lot of history. Gopod triumphs over bad every time. At times it takes longer but it happens.
