CA: Doerr predicts green innovation

SACRAMENTO - A hotly contested bill to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in California would spur a wave of new clean-energy technology, prominent Silicon Valley venture capitalist John Doerr predicted Wednesday.

Entrepreneurs ``are going to go out and compete and innovate to bring enormous solutions to the market'' if the bill passes, Doerr, a partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, said at a news conference at the Capitol. He was joined by Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez, D-Los Angeles, and executives from several alternative-energy companies.

Assembly Bill 32, sponsored by Núñez and Assemblywoman Fran Pavley, D-Woodland Hills, would mandate cuts in statewide greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by the year 2020 -- a roughly 25 percent reduction. The bill, one of the most contentious issues pending in the Legislature this summer, has drawn intense opposition from some business groups that say it will drive up energy costs and prompt some companies to leave the state.

But Doerr's appearance underscored that sentiment within the business community is divided. He said companies stand to gain by embracing conservation and alternatives to burning fossil fuels.

``I think the losers will be those who don't change,'' Doerr said.

The question I would pose..

Who stands to really benefit from this the most climate change legislation?

The public or the 'new technology' entrepreneurs like Doerr and those in the environmental movement and their 'alternative-energy' supporters at the highest levels of the state gubamint?

The same way the California zero-emissions bill caused so much innovation that we are all driving around in $2,000 electric cars today.

Not to mention the new 'carbon traders', as they legally extort vast sums of money from businesses.

This is the #1 Job Killer bill of the year. If it passes, businesses will flee.

In the meantime, Doerr and his buddies will be investing in companies that develop green technology. Unfortunately, the vast amount of those operations will probably be in China or India as it it becomes no longer viable to produce anything in California.

I think they put most of their money in the Direct Democracy approach--propositions to take your money and give it to someone else.

Doerr is a big Dem contributor and gave to Angelides.
Khosla claims to be a Republican but also donates to the Dems.
Party doesn't seem to matter to these guys, imo.

This is the same John Doerr, who along with Reed Hastings, who wants you to pay a new statewide parcel tax to fund a costly new bureaucracy that will send money to only 5% of our schoolkids!
