There seems to be an international battle within the muslim community for the hearts and minds of muslims. If history repeats, the ones with the most swords and willingness to use them will win.
Islam is sort of a world within a world in any country where the government is not already an islamic theocracy. Although that is true with any subculture, with them it is almost a physical thing - like the world of cats in your neighborhood. They have their own laws and territories.
The mafia is another example of this sort of thing.
