The Altar of Androgeny
Front Page Magazine ^ | 17 August 2006 | Carey Roberts

Fact and feminism keep tripping over each other.

For decades, radical feminists have prostrated themselves upon the altar of androgeny, flatly declaring that all differences between the sexes are socially constructed. So when men earn more money than women, they say that’s proof of sex discrimination.

But men have the Y chromosome, while women don’t. And it turns out that one chromosome contains 78 very important genes. Those genes contain programming instructions that control a man’s brain structure, sex hormones, and a host of other functions.

These critical genetic differences play out in thousands of ways that influence risk-taking, sex relationships, and social roles. Steven Rhoads’ book, Taking Sex Differences Seriously, is an information-packed, must-read on this topic.

Women conceive babies, men can’t. Women are better at decoding facial expressions, hearing a baby’s whimper in the night, and simultaneously talking and listening. Fine.

But what happens when we insist that men and women are social equivalents, twisting like neutered cogs in a giant gender nirvana?

Last year I was talking with a woman who insisted female athletes are just as skilled as the men. A few months later, the US female Olympic hockey team played a boys’ high school team from Warroad, Minnesota. The small town boys prevailed 2-1 over the elite Olympians – and that was a non-checking game.

Then there are the women-in-combat zealots. They parade girls like PFC Jessica Lynch as living proof that women can handle the fierce demands of front line combat. You may recall that war heroine Lynch later admitted about her Iraqi mishap, “I did not shoot, not a round, nothing. I went down praying to my knees. And that’s the last I remember.”

Isn't it 'androgyny'?

Gloria Steinem porbably wishes she had stayed with being a Playboy Bunny after this article.

I have seen articles using it both ways but I believe the original word, from its roots is spelled androgyny. Still a good article.

Excellent article!

If you are on the 5th floor of a burning building, do you think you would welcome a 130 lb. woman coming up that ladder after you? Ever watch a similar sized woman try to negotiate a 300 lb man down three flights of tenement stairs on a stretcher?

Ever imagine a woman police officer responding to a back up call where the first cop is trying to deal with a barroom brawl? Think she can adequately "cover his back"?

Women may be able to compete on an intellectual level, but what happens when her "biological clock" alarm goes off? I have read about the studies that show that women who never have kids are at the same level as their male counterparts. They only fall behind when they CHOOSE to leave to raise their kids.

I am a bit tired of these radical "feminists" and their whining. Men and women are different- get over it.

Quick definitions (androgeny)

noun: male parthenogenesis in which the embryo contains only paternal chromosomes due to the failure of the egg nucleus to participate in fertilization

I'm thinking this is not what the author had in mind and is exactly what I would have thought the word meant, as spelled.

Or has wikipedia decided to go for some NewThink, just to be on the safe side.

"all differences between the sexes are socially constructed."

Anyone who truly believes something as painfully false as this premise is certifiably insane.

It is a defining characteristic of liberals that they think if they bitch and moan long and loud enough, Nature itself will eventually bow to their will. That's proof of insanity, too.

Androgeny I think that is why I was a bit confused about the title. Speling it as "androgyny" makes it very clear that it is the opposite of mysogyny.

It is a very good article. Radical feminism is so misguided. Common sense would tell them so, if they only would use a tiny part of their brains.

Note that the Wikipedia link for "Androgeny" redirects to the proper spelling "Androgyny". I don't know latin myself, but obviously there's a rootword involved, "gyn", from which "gynecology", "misogyny", and other "gyn" words are constructed.

Knowing latin wouldn't help in this case as the correct stem is -gyn, which is Greek. Just one more nail in the coffin of literacy, IMHO.

Actually Greek
Aner, andros = Man, so andreia = Virtue, manliness
Gune or Gyne = Woman, as in gynecologist , what my wife calls "the girlie doctor".
And the "gen" stem has to do with, ah, generation.

The semantics argument still doesn't take away from the fact that this is a good article on the feminazi bankruptcy.

Thanks for helping me make my point on an otherwise good article about feminazism.
