His detractors will be scorned for their cowardice. Depends on who writes the history books. Sigh.

I realize the MSM down here has been trumpeting a giant loss for the entire Republican/Conservative political world in the coming elections, but with their record over the last dozen years, I wonder if that "one day" might just be November 7, 2006.
Personally, if I see a "D" behind the name of an unopposed candidate for dogcatcher, I'll write in the name of my grandson's new puppy.

I will never vote for a democrat. Until they rid themselves of the anti-Amercanism, they are a dangerous party.

Here in Virginia, they don't have to declare party on the ballot, so you have to check with the campaign workers outside to know. After the local Democrats removed the Bush signs I'd put up, replacing them with Kerry signs in the SAME HOLES, I'll never vote for a Democrat for dogcatcher either, and I do check.

For added irony and/or protest value, make sure that puppy's a so-called 'pit bull'.
As far as I know, there's never been a Liberal vote cast by any member of my immediate family. From the earliest age my kids were told you can't even spell liberal without L-I-A-R.

The line on Nixon is crap. He bombed the stuffing out of NVN and built up ARVN, which was able to defense SVN with US air power helping. Dems then sold SVN down the river after they took power in 1974, and NVN invaded with 10 divisions of Russian supplied armor, just like the Germans taking Poland.

Interesting to watch TV the week of President Ronald Reagan's funeral. The same drooling morons who spent 8+ years vilifying him in every way imaginable were now forced to admit he had achieved victory in the greatest struggle of the Twentieth Century, the Cold War. They had to admit that his optimism in the nature of the American people was justified. They had to admit that his assessment of Communism as fundamentally flawed and unsustainable was correct. They had to admit that Peace Through Strength worked after Carter's appeasement failed. They had to acknowledge that his tax cuts had started a huge economic expansion.
So it may be with President GW Bush. If his gamble pays off and the Middle East is transformed, his critics will have to eat some crow, too. The big difference now is the Internet. When a Crissy Matthews tries to revise history the bloggers will smack him down like they did Dan Rather.

"The line on Nixon is crap."
Maybe over statement/simplification as it does contain some truth & surely we can agree that, when it came to his largely appeasement-based foreign polices, ol' Dick was definitely no Ronald Reagan.
I'd take more issue with Jimmy Carter - arguably the most inept President in a century; if not in all U.S. history - getting off so lightly.
All said, if we only posted absolutely 'perfect' opinion/analysis pieces, FR would be a pretty empty forum.

"The big difference now is the Internet."
... and that change has come so rapidly:
In Canada, the result of our 2004 national general election was reversed barely 18 months later in January 2006 in no small part because conservatives literally kicked the crap out of the left in cyberspace.
In the earlier election the Internet was nothing like the influencing, 'getting the truth out' factor it was in our most recent one.
Historically, 9 times out of 10, Canada has followed Stateside trends but let's hope, both because Canada has a slightly higher percentage of broadband access & the U.S. hasn't had major elections since 2004, the 'Rats are in for some rude surprises come November.

Bombing downtown Hanoi with B-52s is not appeasement.
Nixon won the Vietnam war. Commies in congress hated him so much they threw it away. Then they peddled this pack of lies about how the American people were against the war all along and nobody could defeat guerillas and all the rest of it. They ran their peacenik and Nixon mopped the floor with him. The Dems split on the war in 1968 and were dead set against it by 1972, but as a direct result the country told the Dems to take a flying leap. They pretend the internal thoughts of the left were the country - they weren't. In 1972, North Vietnam attacked across the border with massed armor thinking they could take the place because US ground forces had left. US airpower hadn't, and along with the ARVN stopped them cold. ARVN was derided by the left but they were the last to give up, and when backed by us the way NVN was backed by the Russians, they held just fine.

I don't substantively dispute any of your Vietnnam-related comments which was why I qualified my earlier comment with the word 'largely'. By comparison to Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon was more appeasement minded when it came to the Soviets. A view which, citing one example, Ann Coulter very succinctly argues in an entire chapter of 'Treason'.
On a positive note, it appears we don't disagree on the almost unbelievably appalling Jimmy Carter.

Before the 1976 presidential elections I remember a history lecturer I had at University, who happened to be an American, predicting that if Jimmy Carter were elected he would make some big mistakes. Seems like this lecturer got it right. Apparently Lincoln, like Bush, had lots of detractors. History has been much kinder. I cannot help but suspect that there might not have been a 9/11 if Bush had been in office from 1993 until 2001 instead of Clinton.

While correct, I suppose, in retrospect, that was like entertaining the possibility of flood damage in the event a major hurricane hit New Orleans.
Amazingly, even in the wake of his almost countless obvious 'mistakes', Carter continues to ooze a self righteous smugness that actually makes Al Gore seem quite humble & non-psychotic by comparison !!!
