Four men were indicted for allegedly running an illegal offshore gambling operation, federal authorities said.
A 12-count indictment unsealed Tuesday charges two Americans and two Costa Rica residents with conspiracy and conducting an illegal gambling business, conspiracy to launder funds from the business and other federal charges.
Richard Anderson, 62, of Los Angeles; Houshang Pourmohamad, 61, of Richmond, Calif.; and Darwin Mobley and Jorge Esteban Hall Zumbado, both of Costa Rica, were charged in the indictment.
Pourmohamad was arrested on July 26 in Richmond and was scheduled to appear in court Sept. 12, according to the Internal Revenue Service, which investigated the case.
Anderson, Mobley, and Zumbado remain at large, the IRS said. Federal authorities said the three operated an online gambling business called bettheduck.com in Costa Rica. The operation was allegedly funded with money sent by wire transfer from the United States to a Costa Rican bank account.
Pourmohamad allegedly was in charge of collecting money from gamblers in the United States, authorities said.
WHaaa..
We are tough on gamblers, but criminal illegal aliens, well that is another story....some folks have to obey the law, and others don't. If you are a group that provides votes and campaign dollars, you are 007. If not, go directly to jail, do not pass GO, and no $200...
Now that we've won the War On Terror I guess the War On Gambling will give all of those feds something to do!
.
There are so many bookies these are just token busts. I knew a guy who wagered $20k a week or more on evertyhing from harness racing to pro football. He used his cell phone and gave a pin number and made his wager.
Imagine all the action vegas is missing out on. Why not just decriminalize interstate gambling and let Vegas, Atlantic City and any other jurisidication take these wagers over the phone or internet? Instead, Costa Rica, Gibraltar and the UK is raking in billions of dollars.
Think of it as helping to balance the trade surplus!
