If live in the U.S. and you think that we have a handle on the drug problem I will have to argue: even the DEA said the Arellano arrest would not make a difference in drug trafficking on the border. This is part of a larger problem and putting a face to it gives people someone to gawk at- but we are a nation of drug takers from alcohol, cigarrettes, prescription drugs for everything from a bad mood to shyness (Zoloft etc.), ADD/ADHD drugs ( which are really just legal meth) - take away all that and much of the population in the U.S. might lose the ability to function for a while- now is there something we feel guilty about that we don't admit? Arellano would have been a nobody if it weren't for our constant demand for instant gratification- moral: most people in today's conflicts believe they are on the rightous side - historically everybody thinks God is on their army's side- but God protects the weak and the U.S. is the almighty global power- how can you sit in a country like the U.S. and criticize the fact that someone in another country exploited our weakness-it's our weakness to be exploited- that is capitalism- we do it where we can too- as a nation we need to start recognizing problems instead of diagnosing symptoms- in order to do that we would have to be honest about our own flaws. the world is changing and if we don't keep somebody will pass us- poverty is a problem, so are corruption at the highest levels and the lack of education for the mass population here and the constant exposure by the media to sound bytes that dramaticize and simplify complicated phenomenon and breed ingorance and hatred (people don't want to think for themselves they want to be told what to think) fighting 'the good fight' there may help with the symptom: the U.S. drug demand- good day
Do we have the upper hand on the drug war? I'm not sure, but given my perspective, I'd venture a qualified yes.
I do know that just like with the abortion issue, the war won't be 'won' by law enforcement or by courts. The drug war will be won by a national change of heart. Indications from surveys are that just that very change is occuring in the younger generation. The best the justice system and law enforement can do is hold things in check until then.
But that wasn't the issue I was addressing. The negative, 'pissing in the beer' attitude was what I was addressing. That's why I was mocking the poster.
Looks like a little sunshine could help you too. The next generation is a lot wiser about drugs than mine was.
They could use a positive attitude from the rest of us.
