I don't own own one. I do remember firing a .22 similar to the one you're writing about in Boy Scouts. After the bolt was closed, a knob on the back of the bolt had to be pulled back to cock it.
I had a Stevens "Visible Loader" that my Brother in Law gave me. I returned it after their boys became older. I should have kept it a couple more years because it "disappeared".
