When there is a kidnapping in the US the FBI tends to want to keep the press out of it as long as possible so they can talk directly to the kidnappers and work out a plan in quiet.
When the press gets involved the pressure can become to great for the kidnappers and they might make a hasty decesion to kill the people they are holding.
