The original film footage of astronaut Neil Armstrong's first steps on the moon, one of the most important artifacts of the 20th century, has been lost.
The television broadcast seen by about 600 million people in July 1969 is preserved for posterity, but the original tapes from which the footage was taken have been mislaid, most likely in NASA's vast archives at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland.
The footage could transform our view of the moon landings, offering images far sharper than the blurred, grainy video shown around the world. It also could lay to rest the conspiracy theory that the landings were faked on a Hollywood soundstage.
Despite its iconic status, the television footage was the equivalent of a photocopy of a photocopy. It came from a camera that had been pointed at a black-and-white monitor on Earth. The image on the monitor, in turn, had been stripped of much of its detail.
To make sure the transmission would make it back to Earth, the images sent from Apollo 11 were recorded at 10 frames per second, and had to be converted to 60 frames per second in order to be broadcast. In the process, much of the detail was lost.
Stan Lebar, now 81, was in charge of the images from Apollo 11. What he saw was so blurred that he initially thought something had gone wrong.

Well, at least they obviously plan to reshoot a newer version with better special effects, once they pretend to have found the tapes again, of course.

Ah, the Moon Made of Cheese Deluxe Extended Director's Cut Edition is coming!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So this will come out on a special 5 disc dvd set? Also, will it be available on Blu-Ray or HD-DVD?
Will Jar Jar Binks be inserted into the picture?
I will only double dip if it comes in amamorphic widescreen for my HDTV.
That might interfere with all the other space films we are producing. The Shuttle, Space Station...
The paper it is written on may disappear, but the ideals it represents will NEVER fade away!
The moon landing was real ..Knock it off .
How do you know?
Im not even going to get into it with someone who thinks th emoon landing was faked. I'm sure you believe the worl is flat as well.
Your not serious asking that are you?
"For all of us who believe the moon landing to be fiction this..."
uh, I would suggest you go over to Democratic Underground. Freepers have more sense then this. Really. It is sick to deny history. It's right up there with saying the holocaust never happened.
About $12-$20 or so. Not too bad, really, since they'll probably last as long as you need 'em. If you're willing to accept used bulbs, they're even cheaper but the lifetime is unpredictable.
Man-made artifacts, especially corner reflector arrays, are detectable at the claimed landing sites. The only way they could have gotten there would have been to have sent some sort of spacecraft to the moon. Given that people could see when we launched our spacecraft, and given that we said where we were going, we must have had some means of getting the spacecraft to hit lunar targets chosen in advance. Did we have technology in 1969 to do that with unmanned spacecraft?
Correct. Jonathan Swift put it best:
It is useless to attempt to reason a man out of a thing he was never reasoned into.
> The government is hiding it becuase the tape shows illegal aliens in the background
Trust Nobody.
The Truth is Out There...
[For all of us who believe the moon landing to be fiction this just lends more credence to the conspiracy theory. This and the first ever interview with Neil Armstrong on 60 minutes a couple weeks ago. No wonder he doesn't get interviewed about the moon landing. He had absolutely nothing of substance to relate. You would think that someone who had walked on the moon would be dying to give interviews. Not so with all those who say they walked on the moon.]
All of the astronauts who walked on the moon give interviews all the time, including Neil Armstrong. I don't know where you got the idea that they don't, but I've seen, heard and read many of them.
Armstrong has a well deserved reputation for being a very uninteresting interview, however, as he has an almost robotic personality and shows little emotion or enthusiasm for anything, but that's just his character.
Anyone who thinks that the moon landings were a hoax needs to explain how the literally thousands of people directly involved in its success would stick to the lie for decades without ONE of them spilling the beans. It's not plausible to believe a conspiracy of this magnitude could exist and the astronauts, engineers and physicists who vouch for its authenticity is compelling.
Hahahaha... i should have thought about that!
LOST!? The original footage of one of science's greatest feats of the 20th Century... lost?
True. It is also one of the things that made him a very good astronaut. His coolheaded response to the Gemini 8 spin accident outside of radio range is what earned him the commander's seat to Apollo 11.
Guy at the other end of our office complex is a major vintage tech guru. He recently recovered all the original initial photo's from the Spanish Treasure fleet salvage because it was all archaic format...
OJ is still looking for the real astronauts.
I wonder how much the lucky collector paid for it.
