I heard a story a few years ago, and of course it can't be verified. But it seems a police officer from Chicago came out west and began working for LAPD. One day he walks into a men's store and takes a suit off the rack. He starts walking towards the door, and just flashes his badge. The clerk objected. He says "It's ok, I'm a cop." The clerk still objects and eventually a supervisor shows up. The cop explains that this is ordinary in Chicago for a cop to flash a badge, and the supervisor patiently explains that this is California and that's not how things are done out here. Eventually, he left the force and went back to Chicago PD.
