Terrorism plot impact felt around the world
Reporter: Tom Iggulden
MAXINE McKEW: And of course it's not just Britons who're dealing with the near miss of such a large terrorist plot. In the United States, whose airlines were the target of the planned attacks, the national security apparatus has been swung into action. Back home, there's mixed messages from the Government about what how Australians should react. Tom Iggulden reports.
TOM IGGULDEN: The British operation to arrest the plotters may have saved lives, but the terrorist plan hasn't been a complete failure. With the 5th anniversary of the September 11 attacks just weeks away, the plotters have shown they can still create panic and chaos.
RICHARD CLARKE, FORMER WHITE HOUSE ANTI-TERROR ADVISOR: What today's plot reminds us is that five years after 9/11, the United States has not eliminated Al Qaeda.
TOM IGGULDEN: The global intelligence community is still coming to grips with how serious the threat was.
RICHARD CLARKE: My concern would be that we only found part of the plan. Al Qaeda likes to do two and three attacks at the same time. Is there a plan for the United States? Is there a plan for the Pacific? Until the British tell us they're confident they got the whole thing, I would be worried.
JOHN PIKE, GLOBALSECURITY.ORG: You do kind of have to wonder why Al Qaeda seems to have such a thin playbook. There was this Bojinka plot to blow up aeroplanes over the Pacific a decade ago. Now they've come back and the details are different, it's the Atlantic, but it's basically the same old recycled plan.
TOM IGGULDEN: And even the use of liquid chemical explosives has been tried before. This man - Ramzi Yusef, an Islamic extremist - is still in prison for trying a similar, albeit more inventive plot a decade ago.
JACK CLOONAN, FORMER FBI AGENT: Ramzi Yusef, who was going to bring on the plane, in liquid secreted in contact lens fluid, and put this into saturated material into a stuffed doll that he was going to put on the plane and explode with a Casio watch.
TOM IGGULDEN: And there's still speculation about whether or not the bombs would have worked. Where small bombs have been smuggled onboard in hand luggage in the past, aircraft have managed to land. The only people killed were those in the immediate vicinity of the explosion.
JEFF BEATTY, SECURITY CONSULTANT: Either the bomb itself is not large enough to tear the aeroplane apart, or the bomb is not placed in a critical location.
TOM IGGULDEN: In fact, in the two known incidents where bombs downed airliners - the Air India disaster of 1985 and the Lockerbie bombing three years later - the bombs were large and placed in luggage stored in the cargo hold. While experts pondered the implications, George W Bush declared that the conspiracy demonstrated that "Islamic fascists" continue to threaten Americans.
GEORGE W BUSH, US PRESIDENT: I want to thank the Government of Tony Blair and officials in the United Kingdom for their good work in busting this plot.
TOM IGGULDEN: The impact of the scare was also felt at airports closer to home.
PASSENGER 1: It's a little bit frightening to know that they were so close to it happening.
PASSENGER 2: Seeing all the Army personnel there and they'd taped everything off, it was pretty scary. But lucky to be home, glad.
TOM IGGULDEN: And John Howard's reaction echoed other world leaders.
JOHN HOWARD, PRIME MINISTER: It's a reminder, sadly, to all of us that terrorism is still a very live and menacing threat to the kind of existence we've all taken for granted.
TOM IGGULDEN: But there was some confusion about what Australians should do.
PHILIP RUDDOCK, ATTORNEY-GENERAL: The advice that's been given by the Department of Foreign Affairs to people who are contemplating travelling to the United Kingdom and the United States is to be cognisant of the circumstances and to postpone travel unless it was seen to be sufficiently urgent.
TOM IGGULDEN: But the British High Commission says it is safe to travel to the UK. Tom Iggulden, Lateline.

Mixed bag of statements. I don't know what a lot of folks expect. What do they think? Anyone, just about anywhere can plan a terrorist attack. Perhaps they don't think. Just something to create some supposed news that is not news, nor original in any form.
Sorry,Julie, but you're barking up the wrong tree here.Because you're from Florida it's easy to see why you might not understand this,but...
The democRAT Party has a stranglehold on this state. It's had that stranglehold for 20+ years. In those 20+ years, the state legislature has,as its first priority, gerrymandered the state and Federal legislative districts in such a way and with such skill as to ensure that *no* Republicans can ever be sent to Washington and that,at most,10% of state reps can be Republican.
Massachusetts is *truly* a lost cause for Republicans. And due to the fact that we're *losing* population (we're one of only three states that is) and that the people we're losing are the *productive* ones,Massachusetts will become even more of a lost cause as the years go by.
But the good news is that population trends nationally and in MA guarantee that the state's influence in DC will diminish greatly in the coming years (it's widely assumed here that we'll lose 2 Congressional seats after the next census).
There was a period of course in the 90s when there were 2 or 3
Congressmen that were from the GOP: Peter Blute (3rd district)
and Peter Torkildsen (6th) come to mind, and wasn't Steven Pierce from the Springfield area a Congressman too? Trying to remember...and also there was Weld as Gov., Cellucci as Lt Gov, Joe Malone as treasurer, and some other statewide offices were held by GOP. Things looked a bit better than they do now.

To the Vets,
It is only those at ease to coddle, determined to appease, and bound to forget evil we must fear. Evil shows its face and like a wolf, it does not always pass by our door.
Jeff Beatty has seen evil, the "elephant" of combat, was wounded, and still selflessly, kept his soldiers safety as priority. He will do the same for our nation.
His determination to head off disaster demonstrates someone eager and willing to fix problems, not blame-the incumbent blames everyone but the wolf.
I pledge all my time and energy to support Jeff, and other like minded candidates.
Stay resolute and determined-we will win.
Jeff Beatty will defeat Delahunt because:
1. In the MA 10th there is a left wing 'Impeach Bush' candidate on the ballot as an independent - That will take up to 9 points from Delahunt in MA
2. Beatty's district elected a republican governoner,
Mitt Romney last time out with 55.7% of the vote!
3. MA has a huge Veteran Population.
4. If we decide Beatty wins - Beatty wins.
We have that power. Lets use it!
Add it up! It means a win for anti-terrorism expert and Veteran Jeff Beatty. All we need to do is give him a boost.
The 101st was surrounded at Bastogne but prevailed. Beatty was shot down, left for dead behind the lines but got 16 wounded out. He is a former Delta Force Officer who entered the race for us because we needed him.
This guy has the right stuff. Lets put on a blitz to get him jump started.

I'll check Beatty out tomorrow. Thanks for the ping!
Did you see this?
Thank you for the ping.
I am in the Massachusetts 5th District, and my Congressman is Marty Meehan, sadly.
But I will do what I can...getting any of these clowns out of office is worth time and money. I will donate, spread the word to others, and contact the office to see if I can help his campaign out.
It may be a lost cause, and Delahunt is not in my district (I am in the 5th), but I am going to donate and do what I can.
I am tired of living in the political laughingstock of the USA. This state has consistently voted for every Presidential loser since...whenever.
I will give money, and time if I can find a way.
Thanks for your help to Jeff Beatty .....This is not a 'lost cause'.
Jeff Beatty has the record, chrisma, expertise and guts for this fight!
We believe he can do it!
He's a former 'Delta Force Officer'....enuf said!
Please read post #49
