If Democrats are getting antsy about the current governor's race between state Treasurer Phil Angelides and Republican incumbent Arnold Schwarzenegger, it wasn't evident Friday at a charged-up "unity" rally in San Francisco.
Several hundred union members, supporters and party faithful turned out to support Angelides -- and to hear from the always-fiery Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean.
Dean repeatedly reminded the audience of connections between President Bush and Schwarzenegger, saying that they shared more than campaign operatives.
This week's defeat of U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman in Connecticut, a Democrat viewed as close to the Republican president, was "a referendum on the politics of George W. Bush," Dean said. "America needs a new direction, and California needs a new direction."
"The biggest difference between Republicans and Democrats is that they believe dividing people is the right way to do it," he said.
"We believe that we're all in it together ... we need to be together again," Dean said, calling Angelides a candidate who could best unite California.
With polls showing Schwarzenegger in a strong position for re-election and report suggesting Angelides trailing in fundraising, the candidate seemed to acknowledge he faces an uphill battle. But Angelides -- to the delight of the crowd -- took on a decidedly feisty tone.
"The bell just went off for the 11th round of this fight ... and I'm ready to score a knockout," he said. "I'm a little battered. I'm a little bruised. I got a cut over the left eye.
"But I'm not a bleeder! I'm a fighter," he said to cheers.

GREAT!
Now they can claim another moral victory when they lose the election in November.
Angelides couldn't slice through warm butter, let alone "score a knockout."
"Dean fires up Angelides supporters in SF"
Wasting his time preaching to the choir there isn't he?
So an election in which only Democrats could vote is somehow representative of the nation as a whole and could be said to be a referendum against the president by voters across the political spectrum? Dry that one out and you can fertilize the lawn with it Howard. So we're to be surprised the most hard core partisan Democrats dislike Bush and his policies? So less than 6% of CT's voters speak for the entire nation in rejecting Bush do they?
People aren't as stupid as you want to believe with this intelligence-insulting spin Howie. So by this "logic," 48% of Democrats who voted for Lieberman were then voting FOR Bush's policies eh?? Wow, not bad for Bush to get 48% approval among blue state Democrats!
...with a lightsaber/red hot poker.
"But I'm not a bleeder! I'm a fighter," he said to cheers.
Yeah, a fighter at the discount jewelry table when nipple rings are 50 percent off.
Once CT get a load of LaMont's ersatz campaign director, Markos "SCREW THEM" Zuniga, my guess is Lieberman will turn him into his candidacy into a future Trivial Pursuit question.
I'd like to see Howard Dean try that crap in the middle of the San Joaquin or Imperial Valleys, or in downtown San Diego rather than the safe confines of San Francisco. Even for California, Baghdad by the Bay is becoming an embarrassment.
I'm waiting for an earthquake to rid us of that pox of a town once and for all. It will be a day of rejoicing for me.
Actually, the reporter heard him wrong. Dean was appealing to his SF base by claiming that he wasn't a breeder.
True, but can we wait till I'm back home in my red county before it falls into the ocean.
The saddest thing about the people here is that they really, really, believe in their hearts that the rest of the country DOES think like them.
Or that they should
