I'm a little in freak out mode as well. My son is flying Continental from Cali into Houston on Monday.
I don't trust the airport screeners, and I'll tell you why. When my son came home a few months ago, his dad planned a big fishing trip. So my son got out his huge, fold-down Gerber hunting knife to bring. After packing, he flew to Ohio for a tournament he was in, then flew into Houston.
After he got home, he was so upset because he thought someone at the hotel in Ohio stole his knife from his suitcase.
When it was time for him to fly back to Cali, we decided to walk upstairs and watch him go through security. He didn't know we had stayed. It was a good thing we did because they pulled him out of line and took him and his backpack over to a table. They looked upset and they were grilling him. I couldn't figure out what they could have been so mad about until they opened his travel case (toothpaste, shaver, shampoo, etc...) and pulled the knife out of a little zip-up compartment. The security guy opens the knife and has this shocked look on his face, as does my son.
I ran downstairs and called a security officer over and told her he is my son. I told them that he thought someone had stole it at the hotel and they let me take it with me. They were shocked that he got through security in California and Ohio with it in a carry-on bag.
So much for feeling safe.
