I wonder if it would make any difference to the enthusiasm for jihad if those we caught were tortured to death, very slowly, on live TV, in unspeakably cruel and agonizing ways, after being well contaminated with bacon grease and thus forever barred from the glories of Paradise. Flayed alive, boiled in oil, made to drink molten lead, etc.
I'm not saying we should do such a beastly thing, I'm just curious if it would work.
