'Today we march," the banners read, "tomorrow we vote." Seventeen-year-old Paulo V., an undocumented Brazilian student who marched at an immigrant rally in Boston three months ago, was among the Latinos who saw hope in those words. "This was the determining point," says Paulo. Before the marches, "I didn't know anything about the topic. But after, I understood how much I could be a part of it."

They won't be voting in Arizona without a valid approved I.D.. Other states should follow suit.

Illegal immigrants chant; "Today we march, tomorrow we vote."

US citizens chant; "Today we vote, tomorrow we vote"

Yup.
Plus very stiff jail terms for any illegal alien caught voting.
20 years with hard labor sounds just about right to me.
Since the Feds won't do it,the states will just have to do it. We simply gotta smash any illegals that even attempt to vote.

This is one of those "if we report it, maybe it will come true" type of news stories. A desired change in society is identified, a trend in favor of that change is made-up, and like 3 people are sought out & interviewed in support of the supposed trend, their anecdotal examples extrapolated to the nth degree. News value: zilch.

This reminds me of the Global Warming Crisis. If we had computers in the 1880s, they would have predicted all the land on the earth would be twenty feet deep in horse manure by 1900.

"I had always been uninterested in the government," says Lisandro Figueroa, a Salvadoran architect who entered the US illegally three years ago. "But now that there are things worth fighting for, I'm convinced, and I'd like to have the chance to vote. Aside from the marches, it's the vote that can make the difference," says Figueroa, who works at construction and cleaning jobs and pays his taxes.

It's okay. Soon they will be "new Americans" and will vote themselves whatever they want.

We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture.

Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende.

For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America.

As I speak, we are celebrating the success of democracy in Mexico.

George Bush from a campaign speech in Miami, August 2000.

You can read the speech here.

Here is an excerpt of a good critique of that speech:

In equating our intimate historic bonds to our mother country and to Canada with our ties to Mexico, W. shows a staggering ignorance of the civilizational facts of life. The reason we are so close to Britain and Canada is that we share with them a common historical culture, language, literature, and legal system, as well as similar standards of behavior, expectations of public officials, and so on. "Today we march" "tomorrow we vote"

That idea of deporting all 12 million illegals is beginning to seem more appealing.

If they are illegal, they will be sent home at some future date. The shamnesty plans are DOA.

Yep. Time to remove all the incentives for staying here and get tough with these people. Make driving without a license impossible. Make getting a license illegaly impossible. Prosecute aidors and abettors. Eliminate public education (or re-interpret the 14th Amendment so only citizens can enroll). Enforce housing ordinances to eliminate "bunkhouses". Immediate deportation of anyone that can't prove citizenship. Pay bonuses to police officers to round up illegals -- including sweeps of jobsites. A bounty of $1,000 each and you'd have enough cops willing to round them up at a total cost of $12B -- a bargain.
