The terrorist attack foiled by British authorities on Thursday was aimed at blowing up as many as 10 airplanes on trans-Atlantic flights, and plotters hoped to stage a dry run within two days, according to U.S. intelligence officials.
The actual attack would have followed within days.
One official said the suicide attackers planned to use a peroxide- based solution that could ignite when sparked by a camera flash or another electronic device.
The test run was designed to see whether the plotters would be able to smuggle the needed materials aboard the planes, these officials said. They spoke only on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject matter.

Presumably the dry run doesn't involve the actual explosive substance. The other items are pretty innocuous.

I wonder if this was supposed to be done for real on August 22.

Plan B was to kidnap Lieberman and turn him into a "Islamocharian Candidate." "How about a game of Bisto Yek."

Do a dry run and you are doubling your chances of getting caught.
That's what I keep hearing on the MSM, and it's coming from several different sources, CNN, NBC, and even Fox News. It's extremely stupid to do a dry run, but whoever said that they were smart? And to what extent were they going to take this dry run? "Hijack" the plane and then say "Ha, just kidding, see you same time, same place, in a couple of weeks. We have to iron out the kinks."
I'm being sarcastic of course, and really I'm just glad that they caught the b@st@rds before they could do any harm to anyone.

The plot was to blow up planes, not hijack them.

Yes I know. I was trying to point out how stupid it was to try to do a dry run.
