Sorry, I have a sticky keyyyboard.
Excellent example.
How many accidents, deaths, material damage, and lost efficiency was caused by using blackout lights? Driving that way at night is far more dangerous than not as anyone who has had to drive in blackout mode can tell you.
How does that loss compare to any differences in real damage caused by nominally aiding enemy air raids? That is the real calculus that has to be made before you can declare that one action is more "secure" or "safe" than any other. Unfortunately, in virtually all the cases people who make such rules pull them out of their ass without much thought as to the big picture unintended consequences of such rules. They make assertions of improved safety or security, but they have not done the analysis to make those assertions anything but baseless.
And yes, not being allowed to carry anything onto an airplane has many complicated consequences that very arguably increase the net risk to everyone. I expect policy to be thoughtful, but more often than not it is kneejerk reactionary nonsense that at best solves nothing and more often than not makes things worse.
Defense attorneys also said the airport and airplane information were old papers left in the car by a relative who worked at an airport.

FBI spokesman Mike Brooks in Cincinnati said the case had no link to the alleged plot to blow up U.S.-bound planes that British authorities said they thwarted Thursday.
Here they're tied to Hizbullah, but no specifics:
Two 20-year-old men arrested in Ohio were being held on Thursday on charges of money laundering on behalf of Hizbollah, authorities said.
Still no more info on the airport security/passenger info.
Car headlights wouldn't just be used to bomb your car. They would guide enemy planes to major cities, military installations, ships at port, bridges, etc. The headlights got blacked out, people didn't drive at night, and we survived as a civilization.
That's funny...I thought you were some kind of FR beat poet or something...
CHICAGO/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Tighter restrictions on carry-on luggage, including bans on liquids, will disrupt air travel for at least several days and make it even more of a headache for passengers already sick of crowded planes and long lines, experts said.
U.S. security officials banned passengers from carrying any liquids onto planes after British officials said they foiled a plot to bomb flights to the United States on Thursday.
The new restrictions were sure to cause major disruptions for at least two or three days at airport security checkpoints as screeners scour carry-on bags for drinks, hair gels and lotions, experts said.
"They've got to search everything extremely carefully right now," said Joe Schwieterman, transportation expert at DePaul University. "Any time you impose a new rule there's instant chaos, but things settle down in a few weeks."
Well, I'm not saying my Friday night won't involve scenes that look like this . . . |
Not good. Not good at all. At this point, I have no problem with organizations saying that no Muslims or even Arabs will be given positions in any security position of any kind.
Muslims have had five years to show that they're on our side and support our way of life. Time's up.
