Ohio Terror Suspect profiled as face of Muslim persecution? (Archive from Detroit Free Press, 2002)

For one particular sophomore at Dearborn Fordson, the teasing began a few days after the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

"Hey, bin Laden," fellow students would yell in his direction as he walked the hallways. Others would point and call him "the terror squad."

Why would students single out someone to be teased about Osama bin Laden, good-natured or not? Well, it doesn't help that his first name is Osama.

Osama Abulhassan is a sophomore on Fordson's varsity basketball team. Having Osama as a name today must be like having had the name Adolf in 1943.

Sobhi and Wardeh Abulhassan came to the United States from Lebanon almost 26 years ago. They named the last of their five children Osama.

"I didn't hear of bin Laden until three years ago when he was in the news," Abulhassan said. "I didn't think anything of it until Sept. 11. Then I got a little worried."

Who wouldn't worry? Fordson has a large population of Americans of Middle Eastern descent, but Osama is not a common name.

"I don't know anyone here by that name," Abulhassan said. "I know of a couple in junior high named Osama. If my last name was close to bin Laden it might be a problem."

The good news is that Abulhassan hasn't encountered any problems from other teams.

No defender has said anything stupid to try to throw him off his game. No opposing player has made any bad jokes.

I would like to think that even if opposing players know his first name is Osama, they are mature enough not to cause trouble.

That was not the case about a decade ago when the United States was involved in the Gulf War.

Fordson was singled out by some other schools as if Saddam Hussein was on staff.

Outrageous rumors flew, including one that some Fordson students had bombed Telegraph Road.

Conference officials called a special meeting, and some schools considered boycotting their games against Fordson -- home and away -- or trying to force Fordson out of the league.

"I got a call from someone asking if it was safe to come into the building," Fordson athletic director Mark Shooshanian said.

It didn't help that during pregame warm-ups in one of Fordson's first home basketball games after the Gulf War began, the Gap Band's song "You Dropped a Bomb on Me" blared over the loudspeakers. But not for long.

"People have been more sensitive to the situation," Shooshanian said. "Overall, our league has been fine. The athletic directors and the coaches understand the situation."

But I have to admit, it was a shocker seeing the name Osama in the Fordson scorebook.

"I'm not ashamed of my name," Abulhassan said. "My parents named me that and I'm proud of it."

"He's fighting for a cause like the United States is," Abulhassan said. "But he's killing innocent people and that makes him appear to be a bad guy."

A year ago he earned a 3.9 grade-point average, and he expects a 4.0 from the first semester this academic year.

He competes in football, basketball, track and baseball. He hopes to go to law school, but his first goal centers around basketball. A couple of weeks ago he scored 16 points against main rival Dearborn.

"My dream my whole life is to be able to play college basketball," Abulhassan said. "I'm just cherishing the opportunity I have now to play on the varsity. Hopefully, it will help me in the future."

Can you imagine what the Cameron Crazies at Duke would do to an opposing player named Osama?

Washington County, Ohio Sheriff Larry Mincks--whose men arrested the two--says there are frequent visits to the area by Middle Eastern men driving rental cars usually from Michigan or Virginia, "trying to purchase as many TracFones as they can," and shipping them to the Middle East. Now, I know why it's so hard for me to find a TracFone. Store clerks at CVS et al say Arabs all over the Detroit area have been buying them out in bulk amounts. After an arraignment hearing in an Ohio courtroom, Houssaiky shouted to reporters that he was "doing my job." Just what was his "job"? Do Homeland Security and the FBI want to face facts that these are not the only two Muslim All-American boys raised in this country performing that "job"?

Houssaiky's alma mater, Dearborn's Fordson High School, is the most Muslim populated public high school in America. Hate is prevalent in the tax-funded school, and many of its students have been participating in the pro-Hezbollah rallies in town. The school is "Hezbollah High." Did Houssaiky learn it is okay to participate in this "job" from his peers there? From his mosque? Or some other Dearbornistan institution?

In the face of mounting evidence against her brother, Diana Houssaiky claims the arrest of her brother is discrimination because "his name is Ali and his friends name is Osma." Actually, the discrimination is that Washington County, Ohio Deputy Sheriffs--instead of immediately cuffing the potential terrorists--gave them bottled water and let them sit in the grass to drink it.

The Houssaiky family has called the Michigan American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee to complain about the arrest and ensuing investigation. The organization, headed by "former" Islamic terrorist and FBI award revokee Imad Hamad, is telling people "not to rush to judgment."

...600 cellphone chips. A boss under investigation by the FBI. $10,000 in cash. Passenger lists from flights and info on airport security checkpoints. Lying to police about it. They hail from Dearborn, home to thousands of Hezbollah-supporting Islamists. And we are not supposed to "rush to judgment"?

I heard the Prophet saying, "In the last days (of the world) there will appear young people with foolish thoughts and ideas. They will give good talks, but they will go out of Islam as an arrow goes out of its game, their faith will not exceed their throats. So, wherever you find them, kill them, for there will be a reward for their killers on the Day of Resurrection."

HADITH Sahih Bukhari [9:84:64] Narrated 'Ali:
Whenever I tell you a narration from Allah's Apostle, by Allah, I would rather fall down from the sky than ascribe a false statement to him, but if I tell you something between me and you (not a Hadith) then it was indeed a trick (i.e., I may say things just to cheat my enemy). No doubt I heard Allah's Apostle saying, "During the last days there will appear some young foolish people who will say the best words but their faith will not go beyond their throats (i.e. they will have no faith) and will go out from (leave) their religion as an arrow goes out of the game. A group would secede itself (from the Ummah) when there would be dissension among the Muslims. Out of the two groups who would be nearer the truth would kill them.

Unlike Christians, Muslims can pretend to deny their faith to fool unbelievers (Al-Taqiyyah):
KORAN [16.106] He who disbelieves in Allah after his having believed, not he who is compelled while his heart is at rest on account of faith, but he who opens (his) breast to disbelief-- on these is the wrath of Allah, and they shall have a grievous chastisement.

UNEQUAL JUSTICE:
HADITH Sahih Bukhari [4:52:283] Narrated Abu Juhaifa:
I asked Ali, "Do you have the knowledge of any Divine Inspiration besides what is in Allah's Book?" 'Ali replied, "...we have what is written in this paper as well." I asked, "What is written in this paper?" He replied, "...the judgment that no Muslim should be killed for killing an infidel."

HADITH Sunan Abu Dawud [14:2526] Narrated Anas ibn Malik:
The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: Three things are the roots of faith: to refrain from (killing) a person who utters, "There is no god but Allah" and not to declare him unbeliever whatever sin he commits, and not to excommunicate him from Islam for his any action; and jihad will be performed continuously since the day Allah sent me as a prophet until the day the last member of my community will fight with the Dajjal (Antichrist). The tyranny of any tyrant and the justice of any just (ruler) will not invalidate it. One must have faith in Divine decree.

WOMEN (and girls) IN ISLAM:
KORAN [2.223] Your wives are a tilth for you, so go into your tilth when you like, and do good beforehand for yourselves, and be careful (of your duty) to Allah, and know that you will meet Him, and give good news to the believers.

KORAN [4.34] Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great.

The Prophet engaged me when I was a girl of six (years). We went to Medina and stayed at the home of Bani-al-Harith bin Khazraj. Then I got ill and my hair fell down. Later on my hair grew (again) and my mother, Um Ruman, came to me while I was playing in a swing with some of my girl friends. She called me, and I went to her, not knowing what she wanted to do to me. She caught me by the hand and made me stand at the door of the house. I was breathless then, and when my breathing became Allright, she took some water and rubbed my face and head with it. Then she took me into the house. There in the house I saw some Ansari women who said, "Best wishes and Allah's Blessing and a good luck." Then she entrusted me to them and they prepared me (for the marriage). Unexpectedly Allah's Apostle came to me in the forenoon and my mother handed me over to him, and at that time I was a girl of nine years of age.

HADITH Sahih Bukhari [7:62:64] Narrated 'Aisha:
that the Prophet married her when she was six years old and he consummated his marriage when she was nine years old, and then she remained with him for nine years (i.e., till his death).

HADITH Sahih Bukhari [4:52:177] Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established until you fight with the Jews, and the stone behind which a Jew will be hiding will say. "O Muslim! There is a Jew hiding behind me, so kill him."

HADITH Sahih Bukhari [4:56:791] Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar:
I heard Allah's Apostle saying, "The Jews will fight with you, and you will be given victory over them so that a stone will say, 'O Muslim! There is a Jew behind me; kill him!' "

HADITH Sahih Muslim [41:6981] Ibn 'Umar reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying:
You will fight against the Jews and you will kill them until even a stone would say: Come here, Muslim, there is a Jew (hiding himself behind me); kill him.

HADITH Sahih Muslim [41:6982] Ubaidullah has reported this hadith with this chain of transmitters (and the Words are):
"There is a Jew behind me."

HADITH Sahih Muslim [41:6983] Abdullah b. 'Umar reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying:
You and the Jews would fight against one another until a stone would say: Muslim, here is a Jew behind me; come and kill him.

HADITH Sahih Muslim [41:6984] Abdullah b. 'Umar reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said:
The Jews will fight against you and you will gain victory over them until the stone would say: Muslim, here is a Jew behind me; kill him.

HADITH Sahih Muslim [41:6985] Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying:
The last hour would not come unless the Muslims will fight against the Jews and the Muslims would kill them until the Jews would hide themselves behind a stone or a tree and a stone or a tree would say: Muslim, or the servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me; come and kill him; but the tree Gharqad would not say, for it is the tree of the Jews.
