Dearborn (pop. 97,775), adjacent to Detroit, has an estimated 30,000 Muslims, who moved there largely to work in the auto industry. Stergalas says 95% of Fordson's 2,300-student enrollment is Muslim.
Co-captain Ali Houssaiky, a fullback and Division I prospect, says some of his teammates will break their fasts today and Friday. "We've worked very hard to reach (the playoffs)," he says. They'll make up the missed days later, which is allowable.
"I'll get up at 4 a.m. to eat breakfast," he says. "It's an awesome feeling playing on this team where everyone understands what this sacrifice means."
Houssaiky, whose parents were born in Lebanon, says players speak Arabic on the field, giving Fordson an advantage. "The teams think we're mumbling" when they change plays.
