Okay - I'm not awake but here my recollection:
In the book The New Jackals by Simon Reeve, which was about OBL and Ramzi Yousef, the FBI said Yousef was the most experienced bomber they'd ever worked to find. He's in jail now but knew how to make bombs using ingredients hidden in a contact lens case and a watch.

You're right on track... and I'm not awake either. ;oP
My #1490 has a link to some of the aspects of Bojinka... I'm in a position to comment on ways of making an infight detonation device for a bojinka-like liquid explosive, but my better judgment tells me not to. Short of evolving the flying experience to something we have never seen before, it's not possible (in my opinion) to prevent this plot from evolving, and being employed again.
