Foreigner Found With Prepaids, Cash In Murrysville Is Held By Feds

GREENSBURG, Pa. -- A man from the Republic of Georgia is being held in the Westmoreland County Prison after he and another man from that country were found with 15 prepaid cell phones and $4,200 in cash, police said.

The Tribune-Review reported that Malkhaz Zakutashvili, 53, was held through the federal Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Murrysville police said the federal agency told police not to hold the second man, Zurabi Maisuradze, 25.

Police said the men were questioned just before 8 p.m. Saturday because their van, which did not have a permanent registration plate, was stopped in a lane of traffic in the Franklin Plaza parking lot.

The men said they were immigrants, but each displayed Michigan driver's licenses, police said.

Zakutashvili told police he was in the country illegally, Tappe said. Maisuradze claimed to have a visa, but he said he had forgotten to bring it with him.

The prepaid cell phones, which the men had recently purchased in Monroeville and Murrysville, were found inside the van. Also in the van were a laptop computer and global-positioning software.

A bomb-sniffing dog found nothing suspicious in the van, which had no seats or wall paneling inside, police said.

The men said they were on the way to Philadelphia and had visited a local drug store to buy batteries, police said.

Just a couple of illegals with US drivers liceneses, cash, prepaid cellphones, a laptop and GPS stuff. Maybe they're just on holiday and doing a little GEOCACHING

No, they just want to make sure they can call in and tell us of their whereabouts. They don't want to make us worry about them, like those irresponsible Egyptians.

Nothing to see here. They just came here looking for work and are lousy at reading roadsigns. < /s >

There are lots of crooks WORKING for the DMV across the country. A driver's license should only be used to ID someone driving a car. A passport is GENUINE ID.

Actually there was some legislation I read about that made carrying more than $3,000 in cash (without proper papers) made it subject to seizure (as criminal) (maybe it was during interstate travel).

Totally against the Constitution, but then much of RICO is.

Let's hope not. But, as Georgians make up a good portion of the so-called "Russian Mafia" they'll sell their souls for $$$$. The Mafia in Moscow is predominantly Chechen, Azeri, Armenian, and Georgian.

Ah yes, one of the byproducts of a godless state. Thank-you Joseph Stalin.

Ya gotta go back further than Stalin - more like, "Thank You, Genghis Khan" (the Mongols started the tribute payment for protection system in that neck o' da woods).

I'd have some questions for the DMV in Michigan...

I'd also like to know what's going on with our (Michigan's) Secretary of state. After the new design of our licences which even include a barcode, you would think that that would discourage counterfeitting.

I was referring to the lack of moral fabric in the society due to the lack of God in the Soviet Union.

That's an easy assumption to make, but you would be surprised at the numbers of people who managed to worship in secret during such times - some said their faith got them through. Plus, I'd put a wager that more young people in the Former Soviet Union are attending church in larger numbers then we have in the West...

Illegal phones and $3000 in cash --WOWWWWWW

That is one hell of a straw dog.

I think I rather talk about Russias renewed attempt to take us into WWIII.

It's the Secretary of State here and we just closed some Lake Superior-sized loopholes in our get-a-license law. Just made the law so people actually have to prove they are a resident of the state BEFORE getting a license. Should have been a no-brainer, right?

There was another thread yesterday about the attempted purchase of large quantities of cell phones/phone cards in Grafton, WV. The purchases were attempted at a Dollar General Store and when limits (I believe no more than two cards/phones) were placed there, the 'customers' then went to a WalMart (where they were limited to small quantities as well...but had to make the purchases there under the watchful gaze of WalMart security cams). Clerks at both stores found the strangers (Grafton is a small town) and their request odd and contacted local authorities (who then contacted the Feds). Oddly, no description of the suspicious customers was given in the the news accounts linked.

Grafton (in the panhandle of WV) is about an hour and half away from Murrysville. Absolutely nothing linking the two incidents...but just odd similarity to each other.
