"Seventeen students, all males ages 18 to 22, were chosen by Mansoura University, a 13,000-student university in a suburb of Cairo, to attend a new cultural exchange program at MSU, said Cathy Conover, MSU spokeswoman.
They were to study here for 32 days, learning about American history, culture and language. The program cost the students about $2,000 each.
A U.S. State Department consulate official interviewed each student before awarding them visas, Peterson said.
The students were supposed to take connecting flights on July 29 through JFK International Airport in New York to Montana, but only one made it to Bozeman. A second arrived July 30 and four more showed up on July 31, Conover said.
On July 31, she said, MSU notified Mansoura University and U.S./Homeland Security officials of the missing 11 students.
MSU e-mailed the students Aug. 2, informing them that they had 24 hours to show up, or they would be reported to the SEVIS federal database on foreign students.
The six students who arrived are taking MSU courses as planned, Conover said.
