Back in the '70s, an older brother of one of my friends was disallowed a waterbed on grounds that the upstairs floor, where his bedroom was, wasn't built stoutly enough to support one.

The first two houses I owned had concrete-slab floors, so a waterbed was fine as soon as I could afford furniture. I had to put extra blocking under the master bedroom of the mobile home I bought after that. Each was a different waterbed. I've bought them commercially, and built my own, and until a few years ago, when my wife and I both discovered we could no longer sleep on one, I kept the hardware for them, so I could build a new one if I wanted to. The ledge under the platform makes a great place to stash a 12ga. shotgun for security purposes, too. I've lived in several places where I couldn't have one, as well, and didn't sleep as well until I got old and creaky.
