WASHINGTON, August 6, 2006 Mosul police officers and Iraqi soldiers defeated a complex terrorist attack in eastern Mosul, Iraq, Aug. 4, U.S. military officials in Iraq reported.
The attack included a suicide bomber using a car bomb, several improvised explosive devices and small-arms fire.
The Iraqi security forces were led by Iraqi police and supported by Iraqi soldiers from 1st Battalion, 4th Brigade, 2nd Iraqi Army Division. Additionally, coalition soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, responded to the attack in support of the Iraqi police and army.
Initial news reports from several news agencies claiming that more than 20 Iraqi policemen were killed were incorrect, officials said. Several news organizations incorrectly indicated that the Nineveh provincial police director, General Wathiq, was killed in the attack. Wathiq spoke to several news agencies via telephone following the attack to confirm he was uninjured and to provide information related to the attack.
In total, six Iraqi police officers, including an Iraqi police battalion commander from the 3rd Emergency Response Battalion, and one local resident were killed in the attack. Seven Iraqi policemen and four local residents were wounded. No coalition soldiers were injured in the fighting.
Elsewhere, an estimated 14,000 Iraqi citizens gathered in Baghdads Sadr City Aug. 4 in a peaceful demonstration to show support for Lebanon.
The crowd marched through the streets of northeast Baghdad to Al Firdos Square, while 6th Iraqi Army Division soldiers and the Iraqi national police provided security. There were no reports of violence or injuries during the demonstration.
Two steps forward in Iraq and one step back due to religious hatred.
No wonder this incident disappeared from the MSM radar screen.
MSM MEMO: defeated terrorists = non-story; bury it.
Thanks for the post, and comment. Good news.
