I am off to finish dinner (chicken breasts in red wine with mushrooms and bacon) with new potatoes and veg.

I propose a weekly post, ala anita's media nuggets: snugs menu for Sunday dinner.

I want that recipe!!!!  The chicken dish sounds great.

Have a good one.

Give the New Media a chance. Maybe that's something we will change. You have to remember most of their party platforms are based on "emotional responses to events we have to be pragmatic about, it's all they have.

No one thought Hitler was crazy enough to do what he did, either. What is being said now is eerily similar to what was being said then.

Iran isn't Germany. It is still a third world country with or without the bomb. Islam is at war with itself. Unless it can adapt to the modern world, it will continue to slide further behind the rest of the world.

There has to be a catch there somewhere, I can't imagine CBS turning Ann lose without a censor. Probably have a clone of the old "Crossfire" on CNN, with someone like Michael Moore or Buffalo Garafolo who will shout over and drown out her every comment.

They want to hire her, as USA Today did to comment on the 2004 conventions opposite Michael Moore, and then be "outraged" by something she says and fire her, as USA Today did after her first or second column on the subject.  It would generate lots of free publicity.

It depends on what you mean by "allies" if you count people with troops in the field along side the US we have almost everyone in Nato and a number of other countries.. IF you mean Govts that actively cooperate with us in Terrorist suppression efforts via Intelligence and police cooperation, lots and lots and lots.

You are absolutely correct. People would be surprised at the cooperation we are getting from governments which are publicly opposed to our policies. That's what makes disclosure of national security secrets so damaging-it blows those governments' cover.

If you look at just one small part of the terror that Islamo fascists use, it's entire base is brainwashing.

They get young children who have been brainwashed in madrassa schools for years to strap on explosives and blow themselvs up.

Now what is rational about that--it's total brainwashing from cradle to grave in many cases.

The Germans and Japanese both had an air of superiority and belief in their invincibility. My general impressions for both groups is they it was a belief in an intellectual and cultural superiority. What makes the Islamic fascists much more dangerous IMO is they have a feeling of cultural and religious superiority and as such believe that no matter the odds Allah will deliver them. Will protect them from the consequences of their actions. Iraq and Iran have built stinking cities under their cities. They have been planning nastiness for a long time and fully believe that Allah will give them the victory.

In that sense I believe the coming struggle with Islam will be the most difficult and most important battle civilization has ever waged against evil.

I didn't get to watch any of the shows today because I was on the road (returning from Tallahassee after my son graduated from Florida State Yesterday -- YAY), but I was able to pick up snippets of the shows on the radio. I listened to Hagel on FTN, I think he was on with Dodd. Hagel is a joke and should retire. I also listened to Fat Tim "question" Condi on MTP. He is as rude when listening on the radio as he is on television. Condi really put Fat Tim in his place; she is so intelligent and so well spoken.

Their political slant, when it comes up, is way left of even the rest of CBS news.

Yeah, but there's not much of that it seems. The last one was about the 1950's heartthrob movie star who turned out to be a sodomite. That didn't make for good Sunday morning viewing.

Iran isn't Germany. It is still a third world country with or without the bomb.

Check out the condition of Germany prior to the Nazis rise to power and review your comment in that light.  They were much more backward than Iran is today, and much less of a threat to their neighbors.  It took only a few years to become the world girdling threat they did and that was without seemingly limitless oil wealth to draw on.  Iran today isn't Germany in the 1930s.  They're more advanced and more threatening by a long shot.

Having said that I recognize that they don't have the industrial base that Germany had in the 30s.  But then, today they don't need it.  They can "subcontract" it out to fellow travelers like Korea, which has a burgeoning missile and nuclear weapons capability.  They can simply buy it on the open market from countries like Germany, Russia or even US firms, as was proved in the oil for food scandal.  We can't apply the same conventional calculus to this question that has been applied before.  We can't afford a "failure of imagination."

Iran and Iraq were both very modern and progressive countries (by the standards of the time) prior to the rise of their fundamentalist Islamic or tyrannical despot regimes.  Both Baghdad and Tehran had some excellent universities and industrial infrastructure in the 70s and 80s comparable to many European countries.

The saddest words are not "it might have been."  They are "nobody believed that could happen."

I am not saying it will happen.  I'm saying it can happen.  If you deny that then we're done.  There's no more point in discussing this.  If it can happen then we have to think about it and prepare.  If I'm wrong we'll have worried over nothing.  If you're wrong millions could die.  That's not a tough call for me.

Like minds, the old 87.7 on the dial. Congrats to you and your son. I did the whole thing only at "Gatorland" in Gainesville some years back when my daughter graduated there. It's a crowning moment in both of your lives hope you enjoyed it.

I talked my daughter into getting her Masters but couldn't talk her into going all the way with a PHD, good luck for you and your son.

It's a world-wide cult that we're fighting... not just one or two nation-states. It was from a so-called... friendly Arab state that most of the 9/11 scum came from. However... those terrorists could have easily been from Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Egypt, Yemen... or Indonesia.

It's time to focus on the cult itself... Islam. Drag it out in the open for all to see... rather than giving it cover under the the auspices of religion. Put it on the world stage and DISSECT it... SHAME its followers for ALLOWING its debasement.

Shame... is one thing they understand.

As to Newt, I don't think he'll run as an independent. That's not his style. Actively working to be VP, National Security Advisor or Secretary of State or Defense are a different matter. I'd vote for him and even actively work for his election in the primaries, depending on who else is running. I'd definitely like him as National Security Advisor, but I don't think he'd do well overseeing the bureaucracies at either State or Defense. He's too easy to undermine in that sort of environment. Hows the Uru hammer business, by the by?

Leftist clods are attributing every sort of high impact weather phenomenon that Thor used to get credit for to global warming and the Norse have gone dhimmi... But other than that, everything's fine!

Kristol was joking in the sense that he was trying to be funny, but he really and truly believes President Bush needs to fire Don Rumsfeld and replace him with Joe Lieberman and has relentlessly campaigned for that for some time now. http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/006/423jshnf.asp

You know what I'd like to see Newt do? Remember how when he headed the House he trained GOP candidates in conservative principles? I think those lessons have ben forgotten, and there should imo be classes like that for canidates for and incumbents in the House and the Senate.

But while obviously I'd support Newt over any Democrat as well as a McCain or even Giuliani and I think he has good ideas, I don't trust him as a executive decision maker. For instance, his criticism of the President's over-spending while at the same time pushing for the administration to expand the Medicare prescription drug entitlement shows me he's not grounded by his principles in the way President Bush generally is--- not because Newt is a bad guy, but because legislators and pundits don't have to be responsible for their ideas, and Newt's personality is that of a pundit--- and that he's therefore not ready to be President.

The news footage of uniformed Hamas or Hezbollah storm troopers goose stepping on parade or giving the "seig heil" stiff arm salute are truly frightening, particularly the ones of preteens.  You cannot reason with people in that condition.  You can only kill them.  Preferably with as little other damage as possible, but that has to be a secondary consideration.

Very sad, but very true.

Once again I reiterate just how key it is for locals in these areas to stop all this madness before it ever gets started. IT only exists with the acceptance tacit or not of the local populations.

I agree completely

Shame... is one thing they understand.

I'm afraid that won't make a difference.  They are being told that everything they do is blessed by Allah.  they will reject any notion of shame attached to anything they do in Allah's name, no matter how vile, objectively.  That's part of the definition of a fanatic.

I'm really beginning to be afraid that the only thing that they understand is naked force.

Defeat in detail is required.  They must be left with nowhere to go except to contemplate why their god abandoned them.

That is not a final or definitive conclusion.  That is my fear.  I hope that you are right.  I'm naturally a pessimist.  Unlike most pessimists you can't catch me with the "glass half full" analogy, however.  I don't care if the glass is half full or half empty.  I just care if it's filled with poison.  I guess that makes me a paranoid.
