Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, trailing in national polls of Republican voters, has the lead in organizing early primary states for the 2008 presidential run, in the opinion of neutral GOP politicians.
Romney is particularly strong in Iowa, where caucuses begin the presidential hunt. A win there would swell Romney's now anemic identification among Republican voters.
A footnote: A report in this column that Rudy Giuliani intends to run for president has been confirmed by one of the former New York mayor's closest Republican friends. He said Giuliani definitely is running.
Why are all the prominently mentioned Republican candidates for '08 from the Northeast? I'm sure the people who print this stuff know there's not a chance in hell a RINO is going to get the nomination. Are they daydreaming or what?
Well, McCain is from Arizona and Romney spent considerable time in Utah. You must remember that the NE is medialand so, of course, they will focus on the ones all their RINO neighbors can stomach. They think if a Republican can't carry Boston or Philly, he doesn't really stand a chance anywhere else ((snicker)). Plus, the first primary is in New Hampshire.
If Romney has his organization lined up, that is surprising. It seems like McCain has been trying desperately to line up the support of the Beltway crowd, including the White House, while also trying to cozy up to evangelicals.
The wild card nobody talks about is if one of these RINOs get the Bush/Rove endorsement. It may not help them in a general election but it will be a big feather in getting party support. You'd think the White House would keep their noses out of it but, after they took sides in the Toomey/Specter contest, I'm not sure they'll do the wise thing. I sure hope McCain didn't get any promises from Bush after campaigning for him in 2004.
Personally I think Jeb Bush is the best man for the job but I know there's no chance that will ever happen. If he had won his first run for Gov of Florida he'd be the President now. Beyond that, I think Allen is the best candidate. If the Dems take over congress this year though I wouldn't want to be the Republican candidate in '08.
Good. I think he would make a fine President. And what's more, I think he can WIN.
My bet is that Giuliani is the rats' worst nightmare for '08.
Mitt Romney, on the other hand - - good grief! A "moderate" from Masshole? I don't think so....
Giuliani is a good debater; very quick on his feet and most importantly, he's not afraid to jam his finger in the eye of the media wimps.
You kidding? Giuliani's moral peccadilloes will both alienate a lot of Christian conservatives and be tabloid fun for the MSM! There's a lot of muyck behind Giuliani that will stick when hurled...
Its worth noting that it says Romney has the best organization, not necessarily the best support in Iowa. Romney has a good organization on the ground largely because unlike the other contender he is focusing primarily on the presidency. Rudy and Mccain are criss crossing the country trying to suck up to republicans, Allen has a tough re-election battle. Romney could have run for re-election but he was too much of a chicken and knew he'd loose.
Romney may be moderate, but he's certainly a lot more conservative than rudy.
I think Romney could have won in a walk (well, especially since the way he took over the Big Dig mess). Not sure why he thought he had a chance at the presidential nomination, but undoubtedly fighting the 98% or so Dem legislature in MA every step of the way got old really fast.
A Republican commentator on WRKO (Boston) yesterday said she thought he's actually running for vice president.
Mitt's a decent guy and I wish him well in the nationals (but lets face it, this race is Guiliani's to lose). But I've about had it with this state of Massachuesetts. If the real estate market wasn't so flat, I'd be seriously thinking about putting my house on the market right about now and moving over the border into New Hampshire.
Well at the time when romney made the choice it didn't look so good for him in the polls because it looked like he was jiggling towards the right. This was pre big dig of course. Interesting theory that he's running for the veep nod. I wonder who'se veep though.
Mcvain seems to want to pick limpy graham as his veep. As for the others, who knows. I guess it'll be interesting how it plays out.
