No liberty in cradle

The City of Brotherly Love has been enlisted by the hedonists in their war against the Boy Scouts of America. Philadelphia is moving to evict from its city-owned headquarters the Scouts' Cradle of Liberty Council, which serves 40,000 inner-city kids growing up amid epidemics of gun violence, crime, sexually transmitted diseases and poor academic performance. After nearly 80 years, the Scouts will get the boot unless they agrees to end "discrimination" against homosexuals.

In the name of political correctness, the city seeks to discriminate against the Scouts and deprive them of their right of free association, a constitutional guarantee the U.S. Supreme Court has upheld.

But it dawns on us this vendetta goes beyond that, to each side's core beliefs.

A Boy Scout is taught to be: trustworthy, to tell the truth and keep his promises; loyal to his family, friends and nation; helpful to others "without pay or reward"; friendly, courteous and kind; obedient to "the laws of his community and country"; cheerful; thrifty, to pay his own way and save "for unforeseen needs"; brave, to have "courage to stand for what he thinks is right"; clean in mind and body; and reverent to God.

These principles are the antithesis of the beliefs of the forces that seek to destroy the Scouts.

The children of Philadelphia need Scouting more than most. Rather than let the city evict the Scouts, parents, clergy and others interested in the well-being of children should march on City Hall and demand that city leaders to stop interfering with the Boy Scouts' efforts to help to mold children into men.

I'd like to believe that. And that's as it should be. The upside is that its membership should increase if it stands by its principles.

You can look anyplace and find an accomodationist, even in the church. The oddball these days is the organization that stands fast in its faith. That unflinching devotion, that "rock", has to be attractive to a culture adrift.
