Exactly! I don't get where people are getting the idea that it a step from communism to point your over powered floodlights towards the ground, on your own property, instead of across the street into my face.

And whatever happened to common courtesy combined with a motion detector?

We moved away from Metro Detroit and one of our criteria was a starry sky. Sounds silly to some, but as others have said, it keeps my head on straight and lets me listen to the great I AM rather than the noise of humanity.

Our neighbor has one of those obnoxious floodlights that stays on all night long. If he's worried about coyote in his fenced yard, fine, but a motion sensor would save him money and me the aggravation of having to look north and not west.

Apparently, you did not read the entire article. The movement seeks to end commercial lighting after 11PM. The movement seeks to limit development. The movement seeks to disrupt or delay current development. The movement seeks to find its way into schools. The movement seeks to change our thoughts, our behavior, and our capitalistic motives...in short, the movement is not freedom loving.

NO EVER SAID COMMUNISM EXCEPT BIGGERTEN.

Nice try but no soap

I think the reaction is because they fear that those who are complaining are suggesting that the government start regulating everything. I'm willing to just regulate the government, and try to keep all of the street lights pointing down and being shielded. If I have a problem with a homeowner, I'll just knock on their door, ask them to come look through my telescope, and if they accept, I will show them why their bright lights hurt our viewing.

If they refuse, I will nicely ask them to turn off their lights while I am observing. I think most people will at least understand. I do not want to make lots of laws. This is a courtesy thing.

You're right, conservatives are astronomers too (or is that astronomers are conservatives too?), there isn't a communist thing about it.
