The Lebanese have to decide between Hezbollah and a normal life. As long as they're obstinate, Israel should keep squeezing them all the harder.

That's an Al Jazeera poll. Look at the source linked for the source. No f'in way on Earth are the Chrisstians and Druze behind Hez. Hez is backed by Amal and all of the Shiites, and at least politically backed by the Aoun Alliance which gives them 58 parliamentary seats(of 128 I think).

Those 4 bridges constituted the last remaining major overland route available for Syria to resupply Hezbollah with munitions.

It is imperative that Israel eliminate lines of suplly and transport between Hez and their Syrian masters/helpers.

It's the most basic of defensive military doctrine with a force with artillery or rocketry capability immobilized but within their firing range.

"OK, given that the NY Slimes will print anything to undermine American and/or Israeli interests, I have to ask the question: what positive end is achieved by bombing the Maronite (Catholic) areas of Lebanon? These are not pro-hizb'allah militants that are being bombed."

Hezzbos are firing rockets from these areas with the intent of drawing Israeli fire and world denunciation of Israel.

There's a well-worn saw about war that I want you to ponder:

Amateurs study tactics. Professionals study logistics.

Think about how that might apply in this case. Take a close look at how small Lebanon really is. Examine the road network while doing so.

Oh, and regarding "hamfisted in their approach":

I recommend a study of the career of one General Curtis LeMay.

I happen to think he was pretty effective.

Get back to me on "hamfisted".

I would agree with your basic point as it relates to a war between nation states. But that's not what we're talking about here. Hizb'allah is operating as an entrenched terrorist insurgency.

Take a quick look at the platforms that are being used to fire the rockets. They're not that big. The photos I've seen show rockets mounted on trucks about the size of a flatbed.

Hizb'allah is well-funded and resourceful. Not to mention loathsome, fanatical and murderous. I suspect that armaments are being broken down so they can be transported more easily over land using smaller vehicles or perhaps even horses or mules. Absent wrecking every minor road and goatpath in Lebanon, they're going to be able to get armaments through.

What do they expect Israel do? Sit and watch Syria send supplies endlessly? Anyone who can get out of Lebanon and get a life should.

"There's a well-worn saw about war that I want you to ponder: Amateurs study tactics. Professionals study logistics."

Your point is well taken. I would add one thing to that saw: 'and victors study demographics.'

The problem that I see with a lot of the thinking about this war is that it doesn't leap ahead 5-10 years. I think that most of us can agree that there will be a cease fire eventually, probably within weeks. I doubt that the ceasefire will result from the Israeli subjugation of hizb'allah and it's fellow travelers. More than likely, it will happen when Israel establishes a buffer zone in the south of Lebanon while the rest of the country is left to it's own devices.

The Lebanese Christian minority that acts as a counterweight to the islamofascists has seen their country wrecked twice in a generation. They're not going to stick around and watch it a third time. The Christian minority has the wherewithal to emigrate, and was doing so even before this war. That exodus will become a flood as soon as the airports and seaports open.

I was reading an article last night (which I have not posted) that indicated that 70% of the Christian population intends to leave Lebanon. I don't like news articles that don't back up the statistics they quote. But be it 40% or 70%, it's still a heck of a number. It's also an indication that Lebanon is going to become like Bethlehem writ large.

So let's fast forward to Lebanon 5-10 years from now. The infrastructure is wrecked. The Christian minority has mostly departed. The remaining population is left to root around in the rubble. And that suits the purposes of the enemy just fine. You see, hizb'allah, hamas and the like love destruction. The long term strategy of organizations like hamas, hizb'allah, etc is to operate as a sort of salvation army of the damned. It's no coincidence that the shelters for refugees in Lebanon are mostly being run by hizb'allah. It suits their long term objectives just fine to have refugees to feed, clothe, and radicalize.

This just in:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1678274/posts

---DAMASCUS (Reuters) - Seventy-seven-year-old Mona Muzaber lights a candle for Hizbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah at the Orthodox Church of the Cross in the center of Damascus.

"I love him. I never felt Nasrallah was a religious zealot. He is a patriot who doesn't seek personal gain," she said. "I light a candle daily for him to remain under God's protection."

Israel's offensive against Lebanon has brought Christians in neighboring Syria closer to Nasrallah, a Shi'ite Muslim, reviving Arab nationalist feelings and blurring sectarian divisions.---

Maybe a stupid Arab is just a stupid Arab.

I'll respond with a quote I used on 9/12/2001:

"We cannot change the hearts of those people, but we can make war so terrible...[and] make them so sick of war that generations would pass away before they would again appeal to it."

Interesting. Israel is getting it's intel from someone. Do you think they're getting it from the islamofascists?

"I must say you are a true Democrat"

And your point is?

This is a relatively open forum for debate. You can engage in that debate, or you can skulk around in the shadows.

The choice is yours.

"Maybe a stupid Arab is just a stupid Arab"

You look hard enough in any population, and you'll find some knuckleheads.

(...and I'm sure there are *plenty* of you this morning who would use me as an excellent example of that being true amongst FReepers...LOL)

I haven't chased the link, and don't plan to....but I note the story was from reuters. More credible than the NY Slimes, but not by much.

"We cannot change the hearts of those people, but we can make war so terrible...[and] make them so sick of war that generations would pass away before they would again appeal to it."

That's a good quote, but here's the problem: the enemy we're dealing with is not sane.

You and I and most "rational" people dream of a future where we're at peace, we're prosperous, we have a modicum of personal freedom, we have our health, happy families, etc.

The enemy's idea of paradise is a half-starved refugee camp full of like minded zealots. War for them is a large part of the objective.

I doubt that the Israelis make any raids without a specific strategic or tactical purpose. I don't think they are sending a message or trying to terrify the population in general. Starving out the enemy is one specific strategic goal.

Someone said Assad loves his palaces more than he hates Israel. The Lebanonese may find they like their homes more than Hezbollah.
