KABUL -- Afghanistan plans to deport hundreds of visiting South Korean Christians over security fears after Islamic clerics demanded their expulsion, accusing them of trying to spread Christianity.
There was no official comment from the Afghan government, but a member of the visiting Korean team in Kabul confirmed the deportation order.
"Yes, yes, we have been told to leave Afghanistan because of security concerns," Kang Sung-han told Reuters news agency.
He said the Koreans in the capital have been confined to their guest houses while those outside Kabul have begun returning to prepare to leave the country.
A Foreign Ministry official in Seoul said the Afghan government had deported 35 of the evangelical Christians in the past few days and soon would send home 900 more.
"The government has started the process of deporting the South Koreans, but securing available planes to take them back to South Korea would not be an easy job," the official said.
About 2,000 Koreans say they came to Afghanistan for a "peace festival and educational and entertainment programs."

Bingo. This is exactly what the "we can create Muslim democracy" crowd don't understand. "Democracy" as we practice it is about far more than majority rule. It is about respect for minority rights and safegaurding certain rights that even a majority can not infringe upon.
Democracy is NOT some cure all - even if we could successfully impose something resembling it. Democracy produced a Hamas government in the Palestinian Territories. Democracy produced a Chavez government in Venezuela - a government far more dangerous to the United States than Cuba has been in many years. Democracy produced a Shiite government in Iraq that shows no sign of religious moderation or a willingness to reign in Shia militias.
I would argue that "democracy" is actually producing much more dangerous advisaries - because elected foes actually have the legitimacy dictators lack.
Too many people make the terrible mistake of assuming these populations will just vote for people we approve of if only they had a democracy. The problem is, many of the worlds population believe in something diametrically opposed to those things we hold most valuable. All of the world peoples do NOT infact put the premium on freedom and liberty that we in the United States do.
Exactly. Pefectly said.
