Syria's Christians rally behind Hizbollah

Seventy-seven-year-old Mona Muzaber lights a candle for Hizbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah at the Orthodox Church of the Cross in the centre of Damascus.

"I love him. I never felt Nasrallah was a religious zealot. He is a patriot who doesn't seek personal gain," she said. "I light a candle daily for him to remain under God's protection."

Israel's offensive against Lebanon has brought Christians in neighbouring Syria closer to Nasrallah, a Shi'ite Muslim, reviving Arab nationalist feelings and blurring sectarian divisions.

Bishops and priests say Syria's Christians, a devout community of around three million out of a population of 18 million, identify strongly with Nasrallah's battle with Israel, which has occupied Syria's Golan Heights since 1967.

"Pray for the resistance, pray for Hassan Nasrallah. He is defending justice," Father Elias Zahlawi told the congregation at special mass held at the Lady of Damascus, a Catholic church.

Across Damascus Christians, like Muslims, sit glued to Nasrallah's al-Manar television, receptive to his portrayal of the war as one in defence of all Arabs, as well as Muslims.

At the biblical-era Straight Street, Khaldoun Uzrai hung the yellow flags of Hizbollah all over his liquor and grocery shop.

"We are Arabs at the end of the day. Nasrallah is one of our own. He is realising our dreams," Uzrai said.

Syria is staging this as arab versus jew rather than jew versus radical islam. Interestingly enough, Syria's backer is Iran, a non-arab country. There is nothing Iran wants more than arabs to war with Israel and for Iran to pick up the pieces and organize a global arab war against the United States.

1. This is from Reuters. Enough said.

2. Christians living in the land that breeds terrorists and supports terrorism. Do you think they’d choose to voice support for Israel?

3. They’re getting all sugary over the terrorist leader. They probably liked him already.

Don't know if anecdotal evidence counts for much, but a Syrian "Christian" told me of his admiration for Nasrallah a few years ago.

There's nothing that unites the Arabs--Muslims and Christians alike--like their hatred of the Jews.

Well, Lebanon's Christians don't seem to be:

Hezbollah uses Christian villages as shields in missile attacks

Washington DC, Aug. 03, 2006 (CNA) - Recent reports indicate that Hezbollah is using Christian villages to shield its attacks against Israel.

According to Christian Solidarity International, Hezbollah is hiding among civilian populations, mostly in southern Lebanese towns, such as Ain Ebel, Rmeish, Alma Alshaab.

[snip]

A Christian from the village of Ain Ebel, who requested to remain nameless for fear of a reprisal from Hezbollah, reported that he found Hezbollah fighters setting up a launcher on his rooftop. Hezbollah fighters ignored his pleas to stop and fired the missiles. He immediately gathered his family and fled his home, which was bombed 15 minutes later by an Israeli air strike.

Hezbollah has also attempted to stop Christians from fleeing their villages. According to Christian Solidarity International, on July 28, Hezbollah fighters fired upon several Christians fleeing Rmeish with their families, wounding two.

Sami El-Khoury, president of the World Maronite Union, adds that media reports about Christian support for Hezbollah are inaccurate.

"Contrary to Western press reports, indicating high percentages of Christian support for Hezbollah, 90 percent of Christians, 80 percent of Sunni and 40 percent of Shiites in Lebanon oppose Hezbollah," El-Khoury told Christian Solidarity International.

They're really praying that Nasrallah buys their ploy and doesn't blow them up because they're Christians. But, of course, the Reuters journalist would have thought of that. </sarc>

Father Elias Zahlawi is a well-known advocate of ecumenism between Catholics and Muslims in Syria.

He does not speak for Syrian Catholics, but for himself, and his critics in the Syrian Catholic Church allege that he is in the pay of the government and is a spy within the Church.

he protests his innocence.

They're not Christians. Either that, or they're rallying behind Hezbullah at the point of a gun.

dhimmitude is a state of mind, as well as a legal status. That's part of it. Also, Asaad sucks up to the Christians when it suits him, and they remember it.

Anybody who seriously believes that Arab Christians living in an Arab Muslim neighborhood really like or trust their Muslim neighbors should spend a few minutes reading or listening to Brigitte Gabriel. You can learn about here here: http://www.americancongressfortruth.com/
She is a Lebanese Christian, and a VERY bright and articulate woman. After you've ingested her message you'll never be uncertain again about how Arab Christians really feel about their Arab Muslim neighbors, or about why they sometimes say otherwise.

I call BS. The Christians in Lebanon aren't rallying behind HizBalls.

They are either running from in front of HizBalls or sneaking up behind HizBalls to put them out of their cowardly misery.
