This article is spot on. Our son has mild hemophilia and the middle school here in Northern Virginia insisted on putting him on an Individual Education Program (IEP) which means, "Special Education". It was a totally demeaning experience and he pretty much stopped trying. My wife was fianlly, after going to the superintendent's office, get him back on a 504 Plan like we had in New Hampshire. The change in him was incredible.

Oh, by the way. Do you know that for each kid in special education, teachers get a bonus? They don't for a 504 Plan!

Oh, really? Then where's my cash? I've had classes where there were more SpecEd kids than non-SpecEd ones, and my paycheck was exactly the same as when I taught all honors classes. Don't confuse a (stupid) local policy with general ones...

We do?!?!?!

I teach special education in VA and I can tell you will 100% certainty that no, teachers do NOT get a bonus for every special education student.

What you might be talking about is that there is no Fed $$ to the school system for 504 plan students. School systems get about 20% of what it costs to educate the typical special education system. They lose money on the deal, which is one reason my county is finding children not-eligible if at all possible.
