There are versions sold with no pistol grip, a 10 round single stack mag that won't accept the larger versions, no lug, and a nut welded on the end of the threaded barrel. They were designed to be imported during the ban, and many are still sold configured that way. In fact, the ones with that config are REALLY inexpensive... less than $300. For 20K you could buy enough of them to take over an East African country.
Current market price on Russian 7.62x39mm ammo is about $175 for 1000 rounds, but it's been as low as $80 recently and the price is currently falling.
I'll be happy to put you in touch with a vendor who knows the Kalifornia laws and will be happy to sell to you.

FWIW, I already have an AKS 47 & Mak 90, numerous hi-cap mags ...& over 5000 rnds of ammo.
Current ammo price is closer to $160 than $175
I'm not in need of any help.
