Sixty rockets hit within one hour this morning, about 300 since dawn, and it’s only lunchtime. No deaths, but a lot of casualties. For every person who is physically injured, many more suffer shock and are taken to the hospital for treatment. Mental health services are also being made as available as possible by the Israeli government.

War is very noisy. That’s probably the worst part of the war for people huddled in bomb shelters. Walking to work today, I could hear the boom, boom, booming of rockets to the north.

Spin. I subscribe to Time Magazine (European edition) and have the issue that the first enclosure comments on. The American edition carried the same cover and articles that the enclosure comments on. A week ago when I received this copy and perused the section on Hezbollah, I was immediately shocked and sickened by the photo of young Arab boys in uniform giving a stiff arm salute. Boy scouts??? I thought immediately of the Hitler youth being indoctrinated with hatred and militarism.

The comparison between the 1930s European fascism with Hezbollah is eerie. Hitler was praised for getting the German economy back on its feet (through the manufacture of munitions); Mussolini was praised for getting the trains to run on time; Hezbollah is praised for providing social services to the people in southern Lebanon. There was tremendous denial on the part of the west during the 1930s (“peace in our time”, and all that). I think there’s a lot of denial in the west now about Hezbollah. Hezbollah has stated openly that its goal is to destroy Israel, and its slogan is “Death to Israel”. What part of this does the west not understand? In the 1930s, even into the early 1940s, there was a fair amount of denial on the part of European Jewry as to what was happening to them. Some Jews left Germany, some legally with visas and others over the Swiss mountains), but many more thought that they could handle what was happening and hoped for better times. The rest is history. However, Israel is not in any denial.

More spin. Qana was a tragedy. But whose tragedy? The second enclosure reviews questions raised by various bloggers. My question is, where are the men among the wounded and dead in southern Lebanon? Why are only women, old men, and children being killed? Why hasn’t Hezbollah used a small portion of its resources to evacuate civilians if they are so concerned about civilian casualties? Ah, read the article.

There are more hidden agendas than you can shake a stick at. For one, Shaba Farms. Syria agreed six years ago that this land should go to Lebanon, but the Syrian government never signed the paperwork necessary under international law to finalize the situation. Why? Because Syria has never recognized Lebanon and has no diplomatic relations with Lebanon! Syria believes that Lebanon is part of “greater Syria”. This puts a new spin on Syrian support of Hezbollah that the news networks don’t mention. Chew on that a while.

OK, one last sending of recent reports from Strategic forecasting (just Google up “stratfor” to get them free in your email account). These reports give the cold, hard facts and background information. No spin. Each of the news networks has its own spin.

Quiet today because of the cease fire for air strikes. Quiet somehow seems abnormal.

If you’re wondering how long this will last, perhaps this one question will put things into perspective. That question is, Who fights the hardest in war? Two answers come to mind: (1) religious fanatics (think Crusades, where every living being in Jerusalem was slaughtered), and (2) people who are defending their home and country (think Warsaw ghetto, siege of Leningrad, the Alamo). Hezbollah and its allies call openly for the destruction of Israel. Israel is fighting for its existenc. A quiet day is nice, but has nothing to do with the days ahead.

About half the city of Haifa has evacuated, which means plenty of parking spaces. But the buses are running, although on a reduced schedule, and all essential services are being provided. The mail gets delivered, and the produce shops are supplied and open.

I am horrified that this is occurring. I know that people from London who lived through "the Blitz" suffered psychological damage for decades.

Prayers for the victory of Israel over terrorism, many of us appreciate what they are doing and how the outcome affects all of us.

If Israel is not in denial; this is a realization that is less than a month old. Everyone is rocket range now, and their ox is being gored. That has to have changed a few minds on how to deal with the Muslims from talk to violent action. - tom
