A very informed and intelligent poster on another thread gave us this information, and I see no reason to doubt it.
Why such an odd number, 72?
Because it is only part of the 'legend'. The true story is that upon dying in glory for Allah, the Islam will find himself in heaven on a bed with 100 sheets.
On 72 of them will be perpetual female virgins (perpetual,remember that), and on 28 of them will be perpetual male virgins.
Total=100.
